The Yukon New Democratic Party (NDP) formed the government from 1985 to 1992 under Tony Penikett and again from 1996 under Piers McDonald until being defeated in 2000.
Similar stories are told among the Athabaskan-speaking Navaho and Apache, leading to the conclusion by some anthropologists that the migration of Athabaskan peoples into what is now the southwestern United States could have been due to the eruption.
Kennicott was the chief scientist for this expedition and the party of naturalists sent to assist him included W.H. Dall.
