Xerxes I of Persia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This probably was the reason why Xerxes in 484 BC took away from Babylon the golden statue of Bel (Marduk, Merodach), the hands of which the legitimate king of Babylon had to seize on the first day of each year, and killed the priest who tried to hinder him.
Having lost his communication by sea with Asia, Xerxes was forced to retire to Sardis; the army which he left in Greece under Mardonius was in 479 beaten at Plataea.
He sent out Satapes to attempt the circumnavigation of Africa, but the victory of the Greeks threw the empire into a state of slow apathy, from which it could not rise again.

History of Iran: Xerxes (Khashayar Shah)
Xerxes then broke with the policy followed by Cyrus The Great and Darius of ruling foreign lands with a fairly light hand and, in a manner compatible with local traditions, ruthlessly ignored Egyptian forms of rule and imposed his will on the rebellious province in a thoroughly Persian style.
Xerxes, who had by then been away from Asia rather long for a king with such widespread responsibilities, returned home and left Mardonius in charge of further operations.
He wintered in Sardis in 481-480 BCE and thence led a combined land and sea invasion of Greece.

A year later, Xerxes heard that the army he had left behind in Greece had been destroyed.

 A Commentary on Xerxes
Note that Xerxes is not given an Egyptian name like Cambyses did, so he makes no attempt to claim that he was an Egyptian pharaoh.
However between 486 and 480 we do know from Babylon sources that there were two native pretenders causing civil unrest in Babylon: Bel Shimmeni and Shamash eriba.
Again, as far as we can tell the rebellion of Babylon was short and suppressed easily.

 Xerxes: Biography of Xerxes
His famous invasion was undertaken apparently for no other purpose than to gratify a weak-minded vanity, which was delighted with the idea of being able to assemble at one time "ships by thousands" and "men in nations," who were at the mercy of his unprincipled caprice.
Little more is known of the personal history of Xerxes, except that, in 465 B.C., he was murdered by Artabanus, who aspired to the throne, and was succeeded by his own son, Artaxerxes.
Xerxes continued his march on to Athens, which he destroyed.

 Xerxes
Xerxes became king of Persia at the death of his father Darius the Great in 485, at a time when his father was preparing a new expedition against Greece and had to face an uprising in Egypt (Herodotus' Histories, VII, 1-4).
Xerxes died in 465, assassinated probably upon order by one of his sons, Artaxerxes, who succeeded him.
In the Laws, Plato compares Xerxes to Cambyses in that, as him, he was victim of his education at the court, unlike his father Darius, who was not a son of king (Laws, III, 695c-e).
