Some believed Wisconsin should not become a state because many of the new immigrants from Europe could not speak English and would be unable to vote.
Encourage students to work in small groups to find out what governmental leadership positions were created when Wisconsin became a state, what were the responsibilities for each position, and how leaders obtained their positions.
There was also a fear that men would fraudulently hold property by placing it in their wife's name, that women's character would be destroyed as they engaged in public activities involving property, and that unscrupulous characters would seek out wives for their property.

Persons who had pre-empted claims on the sections of the Fox and Wisconsin Improvement Company's lands were notified to prove up by May 2, 1859, agreeably to the proclamation of President Buchanan.

were little heeded by the people of the new Territory, but in 1840, during the Presidential campaign, party lines were strongly drawn.
Up to this time there had been no county or other organization in what is now the State of Iowa, although one or two Justices of the Peace had been appointed and a post office was established at Dubuque in 1833.

After Governor Dodge chose Belmont, he had second thoughts about his decision and told the Legislature during his annual speech that it would be up to them to decide the location.

Each year, a portion of these lakes are subject to special fisheries regulations as a result of Chippewa off-reservation treaty rights that are mandated by Federal Court rulings.

 Iowa GenWeb Project: Formation of Counties in Iowa
Wisconsin Territory was organized in 1836 from land formerly belonging to Michigan Territory encompassing the area as follows: south and east by Missouri, Illinois and Lake Michigan; east and north by Michigan, Lake Superior, and the International Line; westerly by the White Earth River and the Missouri River.
In 1838 Wisconsin Territory was contracted to approximately the area of the present state, and the remainder of the territory was organized as Iowa Territory.
In 1846 Iowa was admitted as a state, with its present boundaries.
