Stefan Starzyński (1893–1943?), heroic mayor of Warsaw, 1934–1939, murdered by the Nazis.
Following the destruction of the city in World War II and its reconstruction, the communist authorities decided that Warsaw be rebuilt as a major industrial center.
The surviving Home Army fighters were rounded up by the NKVD and either murdered or deported to Siberia.

The Warsaw Ghetto, the last of all the ghettos, was suddenly surrounded on the night of April 19th by the regular German Army which has begun the liquidation of the remaining Jews.
Conditions in the Warsaw ghetto were so bad that between 1940 and 1942 an estimated 100,000 Jews died of starvation and disease.
Between 22nd July and 3rd October 1942, 310,322 Jews were deported from the Warsaw ghetto to these extermination camps.
