According to legend, Rome was founded in 753 BC by Romulus and Remus, who were raised by a she-wolf.
Romulus, whose name inspired the name Rome, killed Remus in a quarrel over which was to be king of their new city, and became the first of seven Kings of Rome.
The city of Rome was the largest urban center of that time, with a population well in excess of one million people (about the size of London in early XIX century, when London was the largest city in the world), with some high-end estimates of 3.5 million and low-end estimates of 450,000.
