Questions of theology and belief aside, Christianity and biblical culture are a part of the mother tongue of Tigrinya.
The Tigrinya terms deflect the more sublime sense of an individual who creates and even speaks for the gods or God.
Unlike in most of Africa, Christianity and biblical culture were not imported and imposed by colonialism in the relatively recent history of the region and of Eritrea.

A poet, whose love for his mother-tongue was perhaps partially inspired by the folktales he loved to hear his grandmother tell, Negash is the author of “A History of Tigrinya Literature in Eritrea: The Oral and the Written 1890-1991” (University of Leiden, 1999).
As a child growing up in Eritrea Negash spoke and learned in Tigrinya but had to shift to Amharic, one of the major languages of Ethiopia, part-way through his primary school education when Amharic was declared the official language.

 The Tigrinya Writing System
The Tigrinya writing system is one variant of what is often referred to as the "Ethiopic" writing system or "Ethiopic syllabary".
These are no longer in common use in Eritrea, where they have been replaced by the ``Arabic'' numerals, that is, the same ones used in English.
It is a slight variant of the writing system used for Amharic and for Ge'ez [gɨʔɨz], the classical language still in use as the liturgical language of Ethiopian and Eritrean Orthodox Christians.
