 Ethiopia - The Tigrayan Movement
Members of the TLO who remained in Tigray and who came under the influence of the EPLF formed the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF), whose goals included the overthrow of the Mengistu regime, the establishment of a "more democratic" government, and the removal of all foreign military bases from Ethiopia (see The Tigray, ch.
Although its political program continued to have a populist orientation, the dominant ideologues within the organization claimed to be dedicated to constructing the Marxist-Leninist League of Tigray.
In the 1980s, the TPLF drew almost exclusively from among the Tigrayan population of north-central Ethiopia for its support, although it claimed to be dedicated toward building a united national front representing all groups and nationalities struggling against the Mengistu regime.

Subsequently, Axum remained the religious and political center of the trans-Mereb Tigray which was the core of the Axumite Empire during the first millenium A.D. Although the collapse of the Axumite Empire was followed by the rise of numerous chieftainships, Tigray, not infrequently, retained its primacy.
Conceived in the minds of elites, the ultimate goal of nationalism may not be certain, as observed in Tigray where a shift from an ethnic nationalist agenda to a pan-Ethiopian agenda took place.
Even as late as 1985, the TPLF claimed it was not fighting to decide what was good for the Tigrayans but only to secure their right to self-determination.

It should also be stressed that some of the core group around Isayas in Asmara are of mixed blood from the people of Tigray and the rest of Ethiopia.
Thus, strictly speaking, the leader of Eritrea, Isayas Afewerki, has neither the firm blood and family roots in Eritrea, nor the legitimacy to be the leader of the people of Eritrea, as defined by "civilized" Isayas loyalists Eritreans.
It is also said that some of the closest people around Isayas Afewerki also have a Tigrean blood.

Hence, the people of Tigray rather believed the oneness of the two political organizations and never imagined that EPLF would eventually descend on them, from the North, as the present day gog-magog.
Evidently, political parties who use such methods to gain direct and indirect participation of the people do so in order to later blame the society or make the society share the blame in the event of their failure in national responsibilities.
To answer why TPLF was persistent about the oneness of the party and the people, the question has to be examined with reference to its political interest.

There are countless testimonies to the monstrosity of the “Red Terror” but none are more monumentally graphic and ...
Despite MeleseÂ’s attempt to hide the state of mind of the people of Tigray, the truth is that Tigray has completely rejected Meles be it when he ordered the people of Tigray to commemorate April 11 or the fall of the Derg.
And within Eritrea, these twin evils of decay belong to that class, which brought about the people of Mereb Milash/Bahri Mdri the catastrophic devastation that, was the Italian fascism, which virtually has subverted and destroyed the psychological blueprint or make up of a major portion of the population!
It is no longer a domestic purgatory; this culture of the sadists is being exported to those victims of Red Terror condemned to life far away from- in the Diaspora too.

Hail the People of Tigray, Defenders of Ethiopian Sovereignty and Custodians of its Civilization
In Tigray, the modern period seems to lend the requisite touch of antiquity, as if to deliberately endure uninterrupted Ethiopian political state.
While the majority of the TPLF fighters (Tegadelti) were sincere and genuine, the organization had been bewitched by numerous political problems since its inception.

To claim self-determination for Tigray is one thing, whereas to advocate for independence of Eritrea is treason; plain and simple.
The first question which came to my mind as an observer in those days, was, why would a front advocating the liberation of Tigray resort to killing it's own people?
TPLF/EPRDF lacks honesty; no other regime in Ethiopia ever advocated the amputation of the country under any circumstances.

Like the "independent" nation of Eritrea, Tigray Province today has its own independent foreign policy and foreign trade ministries; no other province in Ethiopia is entitled to the same privileges.

Ethiopia Eritrea - Background to the Ethiopia Eritrea border conflict
Proud of the fact that the founding Ethiopian empire, Aksum, was centered in Tigray, and wary of the historic dominance of the Amhara, many Tigrayans today continue to assert their ethnic separateness.
Ethiopia hastened to declare that it had won all the land it had claimed, to convince her citizens that the sacrifices and the loss of 150.000 lives have not been in vain.
Ethiopian territorial claims are based on a recently published new map of the Tigray administrative zone.

Yet, despite the ordeals the people of Tigray have continued to struggle for economic development and political freedom with in a united Ethiopia, and have succeeded in securing a thriving regional government with a regional parliament.
The pursuit of political and military repression and economic underdevelopment by previous governments, such as the Derg and Imperial regimes, over the last century had left an impoverished economy and a weak infrastructure in Tigray.

ETHIOPIA: ERITREA - BROTHERS AT WAR
Abai is said to have defined the TPLF's pro-Albanian position at the height of the internecine polemics within the international communist movement in the 1980s.
Despite claims by Amharas that Tigray's development has been over-emphasised, most Tigrayans have seen little benefit from the new factories being built at Adua (where Meles comes from), Adigrat or Makelle.
Meles had argued strongly for a pro-Eritrean policy in meetings of the Tigray People's Liberation Front Central Committee and within the ruling Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front.

For Dutch speaking people Tigrai should be the most appropriate way of writing.
For instance Tigray is written like Tegré on the topographical maps, but sometimes also as Tigré or Tigre.
It is not clear to me why in most publications Tigray is written with "ay", because English speakers should not pronounce this "ay" as in "grey" (the colour) but as "I" (me).
