SnowChange.Org : Proceedings : Tahltan Observations of Climate Change
I will present the evidence from Tahltan observations that I have documented by interviewing Tahltan Elders and hunters.
There must also be an understanding that Western society has a reputation of viewing the world through racist assumptions.
Tahltan people also have names for places that are descriptive.

Tahltan Indian protesters occupy band office : Thunderbay IMC
Spokesperson Terri Brown said between 30 and 40 people were camping out in the hopes that chief councilor Jerry Asp would quit.
Dease Lake RCMP Sgt. Duncan Dixon described the protest as peaceful.
The Tahltan have a long-established reputation as being at the forefront of aboriginal groups in B.C. who have been willing to work with mining companies, in return for jobs and other benefits.

Mammals » Dogs » Tahltan Bear Dog Main Page
Teit believed that only a few of the dogs remained in existence and that they would become extinct by the 1930s.
The dogs were carried in packs not only to conserve their energy but also because the dogs were so valuable and were indicative of their owners status and so were well protected by all.
The Tahltan Bear Dogs were particularly adept at hunting during snowy weather since, because of their lightness, they were capable of running on top of the snow.

This parasite just won't be shaken off the skin of the land easily, least not without belching aloud his racist and environmentally-destructive bullshit.
The Tahltan need what any community or government need - representative leaders who work with their long term interests in mind.
The Tahltan are powerful people, they have one of, if not the, lowest unemployment rates amongst aboriginal people and they are known for being shrewd negotiators who dont stand around with their hands out looking for "grants" and "special funding" like a number of other bands do.

Robert Campbell and the Tahltan Chieftaness
The Chieftainess saw there was something wrong and on discovering the cause, she gave directions to 2 young Indians who started off to the great camp, and who to my astonishment soon returned with the missing articles."
Although the Tahltan accepted his friendship, and extended their hospitality, they repeatedly warned Campbell not to go into Tahltan village because of the presence there of Chief Shakes, the powerful leader of the Coastal Tlingits.
However, since Campbell's report states that her father (probably the Nanook Chief) was very old, the power and authority of his daughter isn't surprising.

The Last Viking: West by North West
And in some cases perhaps they were not acceptable, as indicated by the hard edict of later Tlingit Chief Shakes: "If any white man comes over the mountains from the east, Kill him, for he is evil" recounted in: Robert Campbell and the Mysterious Tahltan Chieftainess by Jerod Rosman.
Thus what may have taken place was likely not a matter of external modification by the Norse at all, but more a willing self-assimilation and the passing on (if not reinforcement) of beliefs that (if not already held) were acceptable to those that received them.
A highly respected member of the Indian group in question, and also perhaps (perhaps not), someone who may or may not have possessed a few Norse genes.

 Tahltan Indian Tribe History
It is founded on matriarchy and is dependent on the existence of two exogamous parties who intermarry.
This family originated in the interior toward the headwaters of the Taku.
The social organization of the Tahltan without doubt has developed from association with the coast Tlingit.

Resist!ca Tahltan Band Office Occupation (Day 25)
Oscar Dennis holds degrees in first nations studies and anthropology and is a member of the Iskut Band which is part of the Tahltan Nation.
Dennis says a large percent of the population want Asp removed but are afraid to speak out because many of them work for him.
He supports the elders' action and in an interview this week, said "Traditionally, when a band chief is no longer acting in the interest of his people, he steps down taking what dignity he has left with him."

This scholarship is extended to all Tahltans as a way of repaying our people, the Tahltans, for the collective knowledge found in these books.
Tahltans are a First Nations people from northern British Columbia in Canada.
Tahltans were situated between coastal natives and interior natives, which resulted in their becomming middlemen in trading before the coming of the white settlers.

 Tahltan
The Tahltan were active traders, acting as go-betweens for the peoples on the coast and in the interior.
The gold rush to the Yukon disrupted their lives and brought new diseases.
The Tahltan live in a dry, rugged plateau between the Coast and Rocky mountains in northern B.C. They speak Athapaskan.

 The Tahltan Bear Dog
This belief is fostered by the Guinness Book of Records, which for several years tracked the last few Tahltan Bear Dogs as the world's rarest breed.
Although Teit reported that "not more than two or three" of the dogs remained, and expressed the opinion that they would probably become extinct, by the 1930s they were quite common.
It's generally reported that the dogs were carried to conserve their energy, but the high social value of a Bear Dog makes it likely that status for the owner, and protection of the little dog from the huskies, would have been significant factors in the decision to carry them, as would their very affectionate nature.

Marxism message, [Marxism] Tahltan Elders Occupation spun by the Vancouver Sun.
The Tahltan Indians and the others in the Dease Lake area off Highway 37 continue to try and protect what is left of the balance of land and life-- and further try to protect the very interconnectedness of the land and their lives that are indigenous to the area of northwestern "British Columbia".
Asp said he's supported by a Tahltan majority and he'd soon talk to other elders as well as those he says are being misled and exploited by outside interests -- environmentalists, feminists and agitators from other tribal groups.
Prominent in the literature promoting new relationships between government, industry and aboriginal peoples is articulate Tahltan Chief Jerry Asp, who's now the government's pro-development poster boy.

 TAHLTAN BEAR DOG - Information
Like others of their group, they had a peculiar yodel.
The CKC has recognized the breed for many years, but it has been over 20 years since the last Tahltan Bear Dog was registered.
Descended from pariah-type dogs that had come with prehistoric migrations, the Tahltan Dogs were centralized in the remote mountainous areas of northwestern British Columbia and the southern Yukon.

Resist!ca Tahltan elders continue occupation over mining deals (day 12)
Asp's council appears to have turned against him with members participating in the protest and all but one refusing to show up to a public meeting called by Asp.
Band council is quoted as saying "We are a part of Canada and have no choice".
The elders believe Asp is in a conflict of interest since he is negotiating on behalf of the Tahltan people while also the Vice President of Canada Aboriginal Mining Association (CAMA) and the Chief Operations Officer for Tahltan Nation Develop Corporation (TNDC).

Word level prosody in Tahltan, a historical and phonetic exploration, John Alderete

 Comments from theTahltan Joint Council; Tahltan First Nation;
We have recently had the experience of a trail-cutting right to a Tahltan sacred site, a rock that is the source of legend, and have discovered that there is no protection for Tahltan spirit places, only for archaeology sites under present BC and Federal Law.
Identification of FN reviewers, assessment organization and shared decision-making should be a primary step.
We would like to see the confusing phrase, "...not just the council or chief." removed from the text, or, we wish to have included the option that Chiefs and Councils may be the community decision-makers, through consensus support of all members.

Stikine River @ National Geographic Magazine
The Tahltan name for the Stikine, on the other hand, which begins in the Spatsizi and winds for 400 miles (650 kilometers) to the sea, is Tudeath'ah, meaning "long water."
Goats are said to collect the dust on their coats by rolling around or bedding down in it.
While the name Stikine, meaning "great river," comes from a Tlingit Indian word, the Spatsizi region, where author Wade Davis worked as a park ranger, gets its name from a Tahltan Indian word meaning "red goat." The goats are actually coated with red dust that comes from the iron oxide-rich slopes there.

But now the Tahltans, reduced to less than a thousand population, live mostly in Telegraph Creek and Dease Lake, and the old capital is once again deserted for much of the year.
Though they had no permanent dwelling houses, they did maintain a ceremonial center near the junction of the Stikine and Tahltan Rivers.
When Europeans first ventured into the Stikine they found the nomadic Athapascan native group, the Tahltans, occupying the land.
