Since the fathers owned no weather instruments they glanced out the window and reported the kind and number of clouds.
Bongoa has a population of about 7,000 and had, I believe, the only physician‑staffed government Rural Health Unit (RHU) on the outer islands.

Terrestrial Ecoregions -- Sulu Archipelago rain forests (IM0156)
The Sulus (Sangasanga, Bongao, Simunul, Tawitawi) also support a population of slow loris ( Nycticebus coucang), a Sundaic primate that is not found in the remainder of the Philippines (Heaney 1986).
The islands are extremely politically unstable, which exacerbates a difficult conservation situation.
Sibutu has considerable secondary forest, and the island supports numerous Sulu subspecies.

 SURVEYING THE PHILIPPINE ISLANDS
The deepest place found in this island sea was 3,049 fathoms, near the island of Mindanao.
As the survey of the Sulu Sea progressed, reef after reef was found to be non-existent, and much of the area that had been looked upon with suspicion proved to be clear water with depths of 1,000 to 2,000 fathoms.
It is said that the departments at Washington were in almost the same predicament, for there was simply little or no information available concerning those islands.

The Sultan of Sulu's Lost Land - Sabah - Forgotten Bone of Contention (English Window, NZZ Online)
But the sultan of Sulu nurses the suspicion that all Filipino governments, from Marcos through Aquino and Ramos to Estrada, have been "bought" by Kuala Lumpur and have deliberately permitted the Philippines' claim to languish until it has paled almost to extinction.
Should that not happen within 20 years, according to the 1962 agreement, the claim would revert to the sultan.
But Sabah, poetically known as "the land beneath the wind" because of a location which protects it from monsoon storms, is also claimed by the Philippines and is the cause of occasional friction between Manila and Kuala Lumpur.

In the Sulu archipelago which was the Arabs' and Islam's entrance point, the religion and culture which competed with Christian colonialism was introduced just 150 years before the coming of Magellan, by the Arab knight Makdum, in Sulu around 1380.
The government form corresponding with Islam, a sultanate state, was established in Sulu at around 1450 by the Muslim missionary Abu Bakhr.
However, the natives had previously firmly adopted the organizational and religious system of the Arabs and were unwilling to be colonized or re-converted.

Moro-Christian Coexistence and Conflict in the Philippines, an article by Renato Oliveros
Tausug are found in the Jolo cluster of islands and there is a thin dispersion of them among other large islands of Tawi-Tawi, Sibutu and Pangutaren.
This is partly explained by Sulu’s relatively early Islamization, as well as by the fact that it has maintained closer contacts with other centers of Islam.
The sultans of Sulu have all claimed descent from him.

For centuries they had ravaged the Visayan islands, carrying off annually about a thousand prisoners.
Salcedo's report to his uncle was favourable and in 1571 Legaspi, leaving the affairs of government in the hands of the natives, proceeded north and founded the city of Maynila, later Manila.
The islands had been called San Lazaro by Magellan ; Villalobos, who commanded an expedition from Mexico, called the island at which he touched Filipina, in honour of Prince Philip.

Sulu Representative Hussein Amin said that the people of Sulu were excited about the arrival of the US troops.
It's also no secret that the Americans, through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), have been pouring money into infrastructure and livelihood projects in much of the large southern island of Mindanao.
The details of the deal were leaked to several prominent US newspapers by an unidentified Pentagon official who claimed that this mission was considerably different from the Basilan one in that, this time, the Americans were going to be doing some fighting and that there would be no prescribed time limit on the operation.

Virtual Philippines - Biz Pack, Special Reports - A Larger Enemy Than Abu Sayyaf
The fact that Washington included Abu Sayyaf in its list of international terrorist groups does not mean that American troops would go to Sulu for nothing.
Muslim leaders in Mindanao have warned against the deployment of US soldiers in the predominantly Muslim-populated province of Sulu, claiming that there was a history of violence between foreign troops and the warriors of the Sulu islands.
While Filipino officials belied the reports, it is not hard to believe that American soldiers would do just that, considering that they are planning to attack Iraq.

But in western Mindanao and the Sulu islands, Islam and a sultanate form of government were already established by Arab powers, and there was a lot of resistance to the Spanish.
The chairman of the Moro National Liberation Front, Nur Misuari, was quoted with a blatant warning in the Daily Globe, August, 1989: "We cannot guarantee security to the foreigners seen in Mindanao and other nearby islands." The quote was from an interview with Misuari published in the Saudi Gazette.

Swish of the Kris - 23. An Era of Banditry
The view of General Bliss that piracy could be stopped by the return of the gunboats was supported by the government, and in February, 1909, the vessels Arrayat and Paraguay were returned to Sulu waters to resume their patrol service.
The Americans had supposed piracy to be a thing of the past and had withdrawn the gunboat patrols.
These were maintained by the American government for a while but no serious outbreak occurred for two years and rise was given to the belief that the Moro had changed his nature."

According to biographer Fred C. Kelly, it was while Ade was there through the end of 1900 that he gathered the materials on the U.S. government's relationship with the Muslim Filipinos of the Southern Philippines that he would later turn into The Sultan of Sulu.
Although set in the Philippines, Ade's "Stories of Benevolent Assimilation" and The Sultan of Sulu are less about Filipinos than the Americans who were determined to "civilize" them.

Philippines President Gloria Arroyo appears to have ruled out the deployment of American troops to help in counter-terrorism exercises in the sensitive southern Sulu islands.
United States special forces are already involved in training local units on the nearby island of Mindanao, and the US has been pushing for the programme to be extended to Sulu and its main island of Jolo, a stronghold of the Abu Sayyaf rebel group.

Occasionally the storekeepers were bushwhacked by Moro bandits, but another Chinese would blandly open on the same site and the trade went on.
The Chinese writer, Chao-Ju-Kua, writing in 1280 but referring to a much earlier period, describes the people of the Philippines, and it is known that the Chinese mapped and named the principal islands at an early date.

Diving around the Tubbataha Reefs in the Sulu Sea, Palawan, Philippines (Zubi)
This whole area is not so nice to dive, since there has been a lot of dynamite fishing and large parts of the reefs are destroyed.
Out in the Sulu Sea are several small islands and atolls (for example the Tubbataha reefs) that can only be reached by liveaboard vessels but which offer excellent wall dives, sharks, mantas and lots of fish.
Bird island as it is called used to be only sand.

 Fiji Islands
Next were visits to Taveuni & Ovalau islands, the latter with the former capitol - Levuka, and, finally, a short stop in Pacific Harbor back on Viti Levu.
Fiji is very diverse, has fascinating history (thrilling stories of cannibalism, especially the one about the eaten missionary), exotic culture (amazing, how the traditional hierarchy of chiefs is still important), colorful markets with strange-looking vegetables and fruits, very hospitable people, plus great diving, hiking, rafting down wild mountain rivers etc. And it's cheap!
We started from the west part of Viti Levu (the biggest island): a stay in Abaca (pronounced Ambartha) village in Koroyanitu National Heritage Park and a short visit in another village: Navala.
