Stilicho - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The natural consequence was that these men (estimates describe their numbers as perhaps 30,000 strong) flocked to the protection of Alaric, clamoring to be led against their cowardly enemies.
Rufinus gained little from his victory over Stilicho, as the returning troops killed him upon their arrival in Constantinople.
This was followed by events which John Matthews observed "have every appearance of a thoroughly co-ordinated coup d'etat organized by Stilicho's political opponents."

Alaric I - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The natural consequence of all this was that these men, to the number of 30,000, flocked to the camp of Alaric, clamouring to be led against their cowardly enemies.
From thence Alaric escaped with difficulty, and not without some suspicion of connivance on the part of Stilicho, who supposedly again had received orders to depart.
This very year thou shalt force the Alpine barrier of Italy; thou shalt penetrate to the city." But the prophecy wasn't to be fulfilled at this time.

The Decline And Fall Of The Roman Empire XXX
The friends of Stilicho who had escaped the massacre of Pavia were persecuted by the implacable revenge of Olympius, and the most exquisite cruelty was employed to extort the confession of a treasonable and sacrilegious conspiracy.
The troops, who still assumed the name and prerogatives of the Roman legions, were exasperated by the partial affection of Stilicho for the barbarians: and the people imputed to the mischievous policy of the minister the public misfortunes, which were the natural consequence of their own degeneracy.
The son of Stilicho, however, was educated in the bosom of Christianity, which his father had uniformly professed and zealously supported.

 Honorius
Clearly this assassination was the work of Stilicho and it did irreparable damage to the relationship between the eastern and the western empire.
But with the Visigoths still rampaging through the Balkans and Greece, Stilicho was in AD 397 formally asked by Constantinople, now governed by the eunuch Eutropius, to come and aid them against the barbarians.
It had since been the cause of much speculation if Stilicho indeed did let his fellow German Alaric get away, or if indeed Alaric simply outwitted his foe.

The Decline And Fall Of The Roman Empire XXIX
The virtues and victories of Stilicho deserved the hatred of Rufinus: and the arts of calumny might have been successful, if the tender and vigilant Serena had not protected her husband against his domestic foes, whilst he vanquished in the field the enemies of the empire.
In less than three months they were informed of the maxims of the new administration, by a singular edict, which established the exclusive right of the treasury over the spoils of Rufinus; they silenced, under heavy penalties, the presumptuous claims of the subjects of the Eastern empire who had been injured by his rapacious tyranny.
The ministers of Arcadius embraced the cause of a perfidious rebel; and the delusive hope of adding the numerous cities of Africa to the empire of the East tempted them to assert a claim which they were incapable of supporting either by reason or by arms

 Stilicho, Last Defender of Rome
Stilicho, who claimed the prefecture of Illyricum for the Western Emperor (which the East disputed) went with his army to Thessaly.
Before his campaign could be developed, he heard of two new catastrophes; the revolt of Constantine in Britain and his usurpation of armies in Gaul, and a massive invasion of Gaul by Alans, Sueves, and Vandals, who broke through the weakened Rhine frontiers.
Although yet surrounded by his household troops and supporters, who wished to fight against his executioners, Stilicho forbade further bloodshed and, without a struggle, was beheaded on the Emperor’s orders in August 23, 408.

A certain Olympius, a palace official, spread the rumour that Stilicho was preparing to put his own son on the Eastern throne, and so the troops in Tictinum (Pavia) killed nearly all of the officials present on August 13.
Stilicho obeyed and thus enabled Alaric to penetrate into Greece, but the troops sent to Constantinople murdered Rufinus there on Nov. 27, 395.

And in Ravenna, Stilicho's rivals in the Court of Honorius (now removed to the north) were busy convincing Honorius that Stilicho was plotting a coup that would put Stilicho's own son, Eucherius, on the Imperial throne.
More than half of the Visigoths died in the repeated frontal attacks Stilicho ordered, and Alaric left the field with the distinct suspicion that Stilicho, who until then had been his mentor, was trying to expend Visigoth troops as quickly as possible.

Both were highly ambitious, unscrupulous men and Stilicho claimed that he had been asked by the late Theodosius not only to guard over Honorius but so too, at least in part, over Arcadius.
Clearly this had been the work of Eutropius, who had connived with the rebels.
This all appeared to be a plan of Stilicho's to take over the prefecture of Illyricum (roughly consisting of the diocese of Moesiae as defined by Diocletian), which by Theodosius had been defined as part of the eastern empire.

It is certain, however, that he was suspected by Honorius and abandoned by his own troops, and that he fled to Ravenna, and, having been induced by false promises to quit the church in which he had taken sanctuary, was assassinated on the 23rd of August 408.
It was rumoured about this time that Stilicho was plotting with Alaric and with Germans in Gaul and taking other treasonable steps in order to make his own son Eucherius emperor.
There are conflicting accounts of the plots and counterplots and of the court intrigues, the relative truth of which will probably never be known.

Rutilius Claudius Namatianus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The court was far in advance of the people, and the persecuting laws were in large part incapable of execution.
The relations, however, between Alaric and Stilicho had been closer and more mysterious than those between Alaric and Theodosius, and men who had seen Stilicho surrounded by his body-guard of Goths not unnaturally looked on the Goths who assailed Rome as Stilicho's avengers.
This crime of Stilicho alone is sufficient in the eyes of Rutilius to account for the disasters that afterwards befell the city, just as Merobaudes, a generation or two later, traced the miseries of his own day to the overthrow of the ancient rites of Vesta.

Stilicho had a stronger personality and a close connection with the Imperial family, for his daughter Maria was betrothed to his ward, the Emperor Honorius.
Thus Stilicho found himself on a footing with his hated rival Rufinus for he became the real ruler of the West, with headquarters at Rome, as the young Honorius was wholly indifferent to the cares of state.
