Reindeer were introduced on the island in 1900 in an attempt to bolster the economy.
The island was called Sivuqaq by the Yupik who lived there.
There were about 4,000 Central Alaskan Yupik and Siberian Yupik living in several villages on on the island in the mid 1800s.

This was granted, but now they had to go to Plattsburgh to attend court, so in the fall they petitioned for erection as a separate County, which was again granted, and St. Lawrence was formed March 3, 1802.

The St. Lawrence Shrew is found only on St. Lawrence Island in the Bering Sea.
Shrews tend to make their homes in the undergrowth and groundcover in forests, hiding and foraging among the leaves and plant materials.
Because of their severe isolation, not much is known about the St. Lawrence Shrew.
