Though there are local differences in the traditional religion of the islands which make up the Society Islands (Windward and Leeward groups), the similarities are major, many of them shared with neighbouring groups - Tubuai/Austral Islands, Tuamotus, and Mangareva/Gambier group.

 Leeward
In the case of an archipelago, "leeward islands" are the islands downwind.
The terms "leeward" and "windward" are also used in reference to islands in an archipelago and to the different sides of a single island.
Leeward is the side of a boat away from the direction where the wind is coming (i.e., the side towards which the wind is moving).

This chain of coral-fringed islands forms the Leeward Island chain within the French Society Islands.

The northernmost island, Tupai, is merely an atoll, having lost any relic of the volcano around which the reef originally grew, except for the shallow floor of the lagoon, showing up in turquoise.
