 Shawnee Indian Tribe History
As a result of this missionary labor the Shawnee on the Susquehanna remained neutral for some time during the French and Indian war, which began in 1754, while their brethren on the Ohio were active allies of the French.
The hatred cherished by the Shawnee toward the English is shown by their boast in the Revolution that they had killed more of that nation than had any other tribe.
As the Iroquois, however, had conquered the lands of the Conestoga and Delawares, on which the Shawnee settled, the former still claimed the prior right of domain.

 Shawnee
A Shawnee delegation visited the Iroquois in New York to request their help against the Americans, but when Iroquois declined, they lost whatever influence they still had within the alliance.
With the war ended, prisoners exchanged, and their claims to Ohio extinguished, the Shawnee and their allies expected the British to leave.
A month later, he met with Virginia officials and signed the Treaty of Camp Charlotte relinquishing Shawnee claims south of the Ohio and promising not to settle there.

Facts for Kids: Shawnee Indians (Shawnees)
Today, most Shawnees live in Oklahoma, where they were deported by the US government.
These Facts For Kids sections are being added in response to the many emails we've been receiving from young people looking for information about the Shawnees for school or home-schooling reports.
There are three Shawnee bands in Oklahoma, each with its own government, laws, police, and other services, just like a small country, but the US government still considers the Shawnees citizens and controls some of their decisions.

Encyclopedia of North American Indians - - Shawnee
Modern Shawnees participate conventionally in mainstream American society, and the three groups remain politically independent.
Up to this time Shawnee society, while imbibing some influences of groups with whom they associated, had been quite conservative.
The government's policy required the group to maintain peace with the United States, and both bands of Ohio Shawnees rejected the overtures of a Kispoko band under Tecumseh and Tenskwatawa, who revived militant Pan-Indianism before the War of 1812.

However, the Ohio Historical Society maintains a page entitled the Shawnee Indians.
Unfortunately, there are not many Internet resources that address the history of the Shawnee people.
There is some debate about the origins of the Shawnee people, however many historian believe that their ancestors lived in Kentucky's Cumberland River Valley and left because of conflict with the Iroquois (Wallace, 1991).

Shawnee - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
They settled down in Oklahoma close to present-day Shawnee and were joined in 1845 by Shawnee from Kansas which shared their traditionalist views and beliefs.
From 1805 on many Shawnees joined the pan-tribal movement of Tecumseh and his brother Tenskwatawa, which led to Tecumseh's War and his death in 1812.
This alliance was broken up by the Americans, leading to the Shawnee's expulsion to Oklahoma.

Tecumseh - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tecumseh was greatly admired in his day, remains a respected icon for Native Americans, and is considered a national hero in Canada.
In the American Revolutionary War, many Shawnee villages were destroyed by United States forces, including what was likely Tecumseh's boyhood home in the Battle of Piqua in 1780.
He spent much of his life attempting to rally disparate Native American tribes in a mutual defense of their lands, which eventually culminated in his death in the War of 1812.

Tribe sues to gain Ohio land for casino use
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Eastern Shawnee tribe of Oklahoma sued Monday to regain about 150 square miles of Ohio that it says was illegally taken in 19th-Century treaties.
The tribe would seek title to the land and repayment of taxes and other revenue the state has collected on it since 1831.
State Attorney General Jim Petro said he would fight the lawsuit and that the tribe couldn't operate a casino in Ohio anyway because the state constitution forbids for-profit gambling.

 Shawnee Indians
Each Shawnee was judge of his own conduct and was held accountable for it.
The Shawnees believed in Moneto, a supremebeing who ruled the entire universe (called "yalakuquakumgigi").
The cunning and deception visited upon the white man was resorted to because the Shawnees felt powerless to cope with the whites on common ground and because they were driven by deep instincts for survival of their race and way of life against those whom they believed would destroy both.

99-6054 -- Duke v. Absentee Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma Housing Authority -- 12/20/1999
Plaintiff argues that the district court erred in viewing ASHA as a tribe and thus the court had federal-question jurisdiction, pursuant to Title VII, to decide her claims.
Plaintiff argues that because the Absentee Shawnee Tribe elected under the regulations to create a state agency rather than a tribal organization, it made a sovereign choice to subject ASHA to all state and federal laws.
Plaintiff, a Creek Indian, brought this action against the Absentee Shawnee Housing Authority (ASHA), raising race and sex discrimination claims under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, 42 U.S.C. §§ 2000e through 2000e-17, and several state law claims.

The census of 1930 gave 1,161, most of whom were in Oklahoma.
Their return must have occurred soon after 1760, and they are said to have settled for a time in the old Shawnee country on the Cumberland but were soon ejected by the Chickasaw, this time unassisted by the Cherokee.
After the treaty of Greenville, the Shawnee were obliged to give up their lands on the Miami, and part retired to the headwaters of the Auglaize, while the more hostile element swelled the numbers of those who had gone to Missouri.
