 Seneca Indian Tribe History
In 1744 the influence of the French was rapidly gaining ground among the Seneca; meanwhile the astute and persuasive Col. Johnson was gradually winning the Mohawk as close allies of the British, while the Onondaga, the Cayuga, and the Oneida, under strong pressure from Pennsylvania and Virginia, sought to be neutral.
The Iroquois did not terminate their hostilities until famine had so reduced the Conestoga that in 1675, when the Marylanders had disagreed with them and had withdrawn their alliance, the Conestoga were completely subdued by the Five Nations, who thereafter claimed a right to the Minqua lands to the head of Chesapeake bay.
So in Sept. 1627, the Iroquois, in eluding the Seneca, declared war against the Indians and the French on the St Lawrence and its northern ailments by sending various parties of warriors against them.

 Iroquois
The Mingo were groups of independent Iroquois - mixed Seneca and Cayuga hunters with a heavy percentage of descendents of Neutrals, Huron, and Erie who had been adopted by the Iroquois during the 1650s.
The British were aware of the American dilemma and let it be known to the alliance tribes they would support them in any conflict with the Americans.
Four years later, the Iroquois began to secretly organize a massive uprising by all tribes east of the Mississippi against the French and British.

Attorneys for the New York Cayugas have filed research that says fewer than 2 percent of the Oklahoma tribe’s members have any Cayuga heritage, and that 2 percent come from Cayugas who left New York before the 1794 treaty on which the land claim is based.
The Seneca-Cayuga and New York Cayuga have been embroiled in a federal land claim suit in Seneca and Cayuga counties since 1980.
Thursday’s memorandum of understanding with the Cayuga Indian Nation of New York signals the state’s interest in settling a longstanding land claim of the Seneca-Cayuga Tribe of Oklahoma.

Issues discussed during the landclaim were "not the same evidence, not the same issues," the governments claim, noting, "The evidence as to the history of the tribe and its relationship to the historic Cayuga Indian Nation was, to put it mildly, limited."
"There were no historical materials offered by the defendants that specifically addressed the tribe's history or status" during those proceedings, he said.
On Sept. 8, McCurn said he would issue a decision whether the Seneca-Cayugas could build a $25-million bingo hall on land they own in Aurelius without local government regulation by Sept. 25.

 Seneca Indians - Tribal History
Ironically, Iroquois politics were the most sophisticated in all of the North-American Native cultures; the Seneca, with the exception of one tribe (The Tonawanda), having adopted a democratic form of government after years of questionable leadership by Chiefs who had come into their positions out of lineage rather than virtue.
Iroquois warriors were also believed to have participated in ritual cannibalism, and were also know to torture their prisoners.

However, the Seneca Nation has sued to take back the land, claiming it was illegally purchased by the state of New York.
He said, “Lazio is losing his battle against Hillary Clinton, and instead of telling the truth about the state’s demand that we collect taxes for the state, he blames President Clinton, hoping the voters in all the land claim areas will vote for Lazio.”
When questioned about it, no answer had a ring of desperation.

Encyclopedia of North American Indians - - Seneca
Traditional calendric rituals and medicine societies are found among Senecas in Oklahoma, but the Handsome Lake religion is not.
In 1799 and 1800 alienation caused by loss of land, lack of access to hunting grounds, and pressure on Iroquois men by Christian missionaries (Quakers and other Protestants) to enter the domain of women—to take up farming—provided fertile ground for the spread of teachings based on visions of the Seneca Handsome Lake.
Senecas of Tonawanda, who had not been present at the treaty proceedings in 1842, objected.

 Tribe's claim questioned
The determination has given the tribe the right to a land claim in Cayuga and Seneca counties.
Seneca-Cayuga officials did not return a phone call seeking comment.
The affidavit from a former federal Bureau Indian of Affairs researcher states his original research was incomplete and led to false conclusions about the Seneca-Cayugas' descent.

Whitener, who said he doesn't smoke, acknowledged that the tobacco industry has long been attacked for selling an inherently dangerous product.
Those nontaxed sales had long been a source of friction between the state, which said it was losing millions in revenue, and tribes, which said enforcement efforts infringed on their sovereignty.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Seneca Indians
The leading event of this war was Denonville's invasion of the Seneca country in 1687.
Very few Christians were thus left among the confederates, but the missionaries remained among the Seneca until the eve of another general Iroquois war, in 1683, when they were ordered out by the hostiles.
The Christian portion of those in New York are chiefly of the Congregational denomination, principally owing to the devoted efforts of the Reverend Asher Wright, who laboured among them over forty years (1831-75) until his death, mastering the language, in which he published a number of religious and educational works.

The Seneca leader questions on several points the missionary’s assertion that Christianity is the only true religion.
A Christian missionary from Massachusetts gathered the leaders of the Seneca tribe of Native Americans in Buffalo Creek (now Buffalo, New York) in the early 1800s to tell them he wanted to convert the Seneca to Christianity.
Author and publisher Samuel G. Goodrich documented the response of Seneca chief Red Jacket in his 1843 book, Lives of Celebrated American Indians.

ICT [2005/05/27]  Mixed results in federal courts belie long struggle to get there
Even though federal jurisdiction clearly included Indian tribes, the District Court had said that the Oneidas' suit arose under state land law and belonged in state court.
In a point of current interest, he discussed the 1867 case The New York Indians, striking down a New York state attempt to tax reservation lands of the Seneca tribe.
The rulings hinged on a technicality, the ''well-pleaded complaint rule,'' that had worked to keep highly charged cases, such as the paper company lawsuit and contempt ruling against the Penobscot and Passamaquoddy Indians, under the thumbs of state jurists.
