Although, in the end, it was destroyed in 409 BC by the Carthaginian Hannibal who used ferociously cruel methods in winning supremacy: this resulted in the death of 16,000 Selinuntini and the capture of a further 5000 as prisoners (according to the account given by Diodorus Siculus).
For a long time, Selinunte allied itself to Carthage, in the hope of securing support in the fight with its rival, Segesta.

The temples of Selinunte were the greatest and most imposing Greek constructions in Sicily after those of Agrigento and they were second only to a few others in the entire country.
Extraction was unexpectedly interrupted in 409 BC, when Selinunte was defeated by the Carthaginians and the allied Segestans (it seems that 16,000 people died and 5,000 were slaughtered; only 2,500 inhabitants managed to escape and find shelter in Agrigento).

 Selinunte
After the battle of Himera Selinunte allied itself with Syracuse against Carthage, and in 409 B.C. the Carthaginians, summoned to the help of Segesta, the mortal enemy of Selinunte, sent an army of 100,000 under Hannibal, son of Gisco, which took Selinunte by assault before the allied troops of Agrigentum and Syracuse could arive.
Selinunte (Greek Selinus) was founded under the leadership of Pammilos by the colonists from Megara Hyblaea, probably as early as 651 B.C. It takes its name from the wild celery (Greek selinon), which still grows here in abundance.
During the Middle ages the name of Selinunte was completely forbidden after a terrible earthquake that wiped out the last few remaining structures.

 Selinunte : Introduction
Much of Selinunte's history involves seemingly endless conflicts with the Elymi people of Segesta.
One of the superb colonies of ancient Greece, Selinunte traces its history to the 7th century B.C., when immigrants from Megara Hyblaea (Syracuse) set out to build a new colony.
Siding with Selinunte's rival, Hannibal virtually leveled the city in 409 B.C. The city never recovered its former glory and ultimately fell into decay.
