Scipio Africanus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Africanus himself was subsequently (185) accused of having been bribed by Antiochus, but by reminding the people that it was the anniversary of his victory at Zama he caused an outburst of enthusiasm in his favor.
A commission of inquiry was sent over to Sicily, and it found that Scipio was at the head of a well-equipped fleet and army.
Even after the last of these defeats at the hands of the Carthaginians, he was resolutely focused on securing Roman victory.

 Publius Cornelius Scipio Africanus (236-184)
Scipio had with him around 35-40,000 men - his Roman troops reinforced by the crews of his ships (who were not needed at the moment), and perhaps some 10-15,000 Spanish auxiliaries.
The Carthaginians had camped on a small hill; Scipio now placed his camp on certain low hills opposing them, but in such a position as to cut of the Carthaginians from retreating to their base at Gades.
For the second assault which was launched late in the afternoon, Scipio brought up fresh troops; enough now to ensure that the whole landward side of the fortress would be under assault.

 Scipio Africanus the Younger
Scipio helped in Gracchus' escape, possibly because of their family relationship: Gracchus was his cousin and also his brother-in-law, though in fact Scipio's marriage to Sempronia had been a private failure.
The most significant influence on Scipio's character was his friendship with the Greek historian Polybius, one of the thousand Achaean leaders who had been deported and detained without trial in Italy.
Scipio Aemilianus publicly condoned the murder, and even though he had not yet returned from Spain, he was often credited with the deed.

Publius Cornelius Scipio Africanus (236-184) : Youth
Scipio's conduct in life leaves no reason to suggest that he was as coldly calculationg as Polybius believes.
Despite these successes of the Scipios, the policies of the Scipionic faction had been severely discredited by Cannae.
Polybius claims that this was merely an artifice to impress superstitious minds, but he wrote in a latter, more aetheistic hellenized age.

A tribune of Scipio soon afterward cut off a large convoy of provisions which was on its way to the camp of Hannibal, and this suddenly threw him into such difficulties that he began to negotiate with Scipio for peace.
During these preparations of Hasdrubal, Scipio was engaged against the two other Carthaginian generals, one of whom (Mago) was defeated, in B.C. by the proprietor Silanus, in the country of the Celtiberians, and Hanno, who came with an auxiliary army from Africa, was taken prisoner.

Scipio Aemilianus Africanus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Scipio himself, though not in sympathy with the extreme conservative party, was decidedly opposed to the schemes of the Gracchi (whose sister Sempronia was his wife).
The mystery of his death was never solved, and there were political reasons for letting the matter drop, but there is little doubt that he was assassinated by one of the supporters of the Gracchi, probably Carbo, whom Cicero expressly accused of the crime.
On his return to Rome he celebrated a splendid triumph, having also established a personal claim to his adoptive surname of Africanus.
