Santorini and the legend of Atlantis
Probably at no time there was a place whose name was written ''Atlantis'' on some map...But the theory that the volcanic desaster of Santorini is the source behind Plato's story of Atlantis is quite supported, in my opinion more than any other theory.
Such are the colours Platos describes of being typical of the rocks of Atlantis: black (lava), white (pumice and ash) and red (lava).
The antique sources from the ancient world that seem to be connected with the Atlantis myth are mostly from Egypt and Crete (listed in Luce, 1969).

Santorini's role in the myth of Atlantis adds mystique to its reputation.
Wiped out by the rage of fire and water, Santorini and Crete fit Plato's description of Atlantis.
Looking on the map like a snake's head with its jaws distended, Santorini's watery mouth was formed by a volcanic cataclysm that swapped land for sea about 1,450 BC, leaving behind the sharply cut rock walls of the caldera and destroying the island's Minoan civilization.

In the modern era, geologic and archeological investigations hint at an intriguing possibility -- that the demise of Atlantis may be related to a catastrophic Bronze Age eruption in the Aegean Sea, which generated a flooded caldera and destroyed an advanced Minoan civilization living on the island group of Santorini.
Before this catastrophe, Santorini was a large circular island with a water-filled embayment to the south or southwest.
Volcanoes like Santorini, however, are inherently unpredictable, and we cannot rule out the possibility of another catastrophic eruption reminiscent of ~1630 BC.
