 Understanding railroad reporting marks
Official reporting marks may contain any letter of the alphabet, but not the ampersand (and), although the ampersands are often stenciled on the cars for clarity.
Like all privately owned cars, these have reporting marks ending in X. While initials can give a trackside observer a clue as to who owns a car, they often bear little relationship to the owner's name, which is seldom spelled out elsewhere on the car.
The following is a list of the most widely used (approximately 1000 or more cars) reporting marks, along with the names of their current holders.

Changes of reporting marks are not listed in the ORER prior to and including the 10/1952 issue (with the exception of supplements issued between September 1932 and May 1937).
This is an incomplete summary of reporting marks used by North American railroads and private owners from 1923-present.
Sometime prior to 7/1937 listings of reporting marks were not provided in the ORER, so reporting marks from earlier dates are taken from the Index of Railroads and Private Car Owners at the front of the volume.

As companies are merged, the companies' reporting marks are normally transferred to the resultant companies along with the original companies' trademarks and logos.

Reporting marks are the letters preceding a car's numbers that are stenciled on the side of each rail car.
Improper application of the reporting mark could cause RPCA to incur some very stiff fines for improper use of the reporting marks, that will be passed on to the car owner.
Also bear in mind that because the owner of the car is considered to be the assignee of the reporting mark, a person who applies an illegitmate reproting mark is fraudulantly attempting to have someone else liable and responsible for their equipment.
