Raetia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the reign of Marcus Aurelius, Raetia was governed by the commander of the Legio III Italica.
Under Diocletian it formed part of the diocese of the vicarius Italiae, and was subdivided into Raetia prima and Raetia secunda (each under a praeses), the former corresponding to the old Raetia, the latter to Vindelicia.
At first Raetia formed a distinct province, but towards the end of the 1st century A.D. Vindelicia was added to it; hence Tacitus (Germania, 41) could speak of Augusta Vindelicorum (Augsburg) as "a colony of the province of Raetia".

History of Bavaria - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The earliest known inhabitants that are mentioned in written sources were a people, probably Celts, participating in the widespread La Tène culture, whom the Romans subdued just before the opening of the Christian era, founding colonies among them and including their land in the provinces of Raetia and Noricum.
During the 5th century the Romans in Noricum and Raetia came under increasing pressure from an influx of foreign peoples.
One theory of the etymological origins of the name "Bavarian" is that Bai(o)arii was derived from Bai(a)haim, which is thought to be equivalent with the land of the antique tribe of the Boii and modern Bohemia (Reindel 1981).

A mark of Raetia was part of Charlemagne’s constitution and continued in existence under the Hunfridinger dynasty, until the margrave, Burkhard II, became Swabian duke in 919.
Raetian counties continued to pass by inherited right, but there is no suggestion that the comital offices were distinguished in any way.
The margraves of Raetia are likely to have acted many times as Swabia’s military leaders, and so it is not altogether surprising that the mark was simply dismantled at this time.
