Provenance - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Provenance is a fundamental principle of archives, referring to the individual, group, or organization that created or received the items in a collection.
Provenance is the origin or source from which something comes.
In the archiving and the management of records proof of provenance is provided by the operation of control systems that document the history of records kept in an archive, including details of amendments made to them.

provenance - definition of provenance in Encyclopedia
Provenance is a particularly large concern when it comes to works of art; a documented provenance for a piece demonstrates that it is not a forgery; it was indeed made by the artist given credit for it.
Finds that remain in situ are always much more informative than those that have been removed by "collectors;" scientists can learn more about their origins from the environment in which a find was located, but the surrounding dirt and dust is seldom of interest to pot-hunters or treasure-seekers.

The Art Institute of Chicago: Provenance Research Project
Among other factors, the upheavals of World War II and the inaccessibility of many key archives during the Cold War have added to the difficulty in determining an absolutely complete provenance for many objects.
Even in those rare cases in which a work of art has been in the hands of a dealer or owner known to have been involved with illegal activities, additional research may show that its ownership is not problematic.
This research began with an initial survey of all the European paintings and sculpture in the collection that were created before 1946 and acquired by the museum after 1932.

Provenance research on these works, however, remains an ongoing project, and a priority, at the Museum.
In September 2003, the AAM launched a Nazi-Era Provenance Internet Portal (www.nepip.org), thus providing a general searchable registry of objects in U.S. museum collections that were or could have been in Continental Europe during the Nazi era (1933–1945).
The Museum of Modern Art owns approximately 600 paintings created before 1946 and acquired after 1932, that were or could have been in Continental Europe during the Nazi era.

 Gnosticism [Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy]
This behavior caused the rulers of the other 364 heavens to oppose the god of the Jews, and to send a savior, Jesus Christ, from the highest realm of the Father, to rescue the human beings who are struggling under the yoke of this jealous god (Irenaeus 1.24.4).
Time and history come to be understood as the provenance of the human mind, over-against futile idealistic constructions like law and order, nomos and cosmos.
He even goes so far as to declare, contra Christian orthodoxy, that Christ's death on the cross was only apparent, and did not actually occur 'in the flesh' (Irenaeus 1.24.4) -- this doctrine came to be called docetism.

 provenance research
Works that are investigated for possible Nazi-era provenance problems are those that were created before 1946 and acquired by the museum after 1932, that underwent a change of ownership between 1932 and 1946, and that were (or might reasonably be thought to have been) in continental Europe between those dates.
Provenance information is rarely complete (especially in the case of objects of significant age) and it is often impossible to establish an unbroken history for an object, in spite of a researcher's dedication to the task.
In the past several years, there has been a renewed attempt by museums to investigate fully their collections for questionable gaps in the provenance (the history of ownership) of European paintings, sculptures, and drawings.

Therefore, while the works of art in the Princeton University Art Museum’s collection with an incomplete provenance between 1933 and 1945 are made public here, the presence of objects on the list does not imply that they were looted or improperly acquired.
