 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: India
In course of time a large body of native secular clergy came into existence, some of whom strongly developed the apostolic spirit; but in general their work was to take charge of the parishes and mission-stations which had already been founded by the missionary orders.
After his death and the breaking up of his empire, the people of India, under the leadership of a prince of Patna (305 B.C.) forced the Greek invader to relinquish all share in the country.
On the whole, Christian missionaries have to be thankful for the liberal principles on which native administrations are conducted under the guiding hand of the British Government.

Goan Voice UK: Supplement to Newsletter
The implications of Portugal& passport racket (said to extend to its missions abroad) and the wide and blatant misuse of the nationality rights offered to those born in Portugal& former colonies in India before 1961, has both Britain and the US worried in the post-9/11 scenario.
From 2000, it increased the number of cases of "identity usurpation": it had each time more people to register a name that already had been successfully registered, says the coordinator of the Department of Fake Documents, of the Judiciary Police, Conceição Jacinto.
This led to three months suspension of the process of issuing those documents, said the secretary of State for the Portuguese Communities", José Cesário, in interview to Diário Digital.

Rediff On The NeT: 500 years after Vasco da Gama arrived in India, a controversy erupts over commemoration of the event
Last month, the issue was brought to the notice of Home Minister Indrajit Gupta in Parliament, who in his reply, said, 'The Government of India considers it ( Gama's arrival) as a historical event which could be recorded in the sense of finding a new sea route from Europe to India.
Caught in the crossfire of hostile public opinion, lack of official communication and the consequences of his presence in Indian history.
In an e-mailed response to Rediff On The NeT, he said, "Gama himself was probably opposed to the imperial ideology espoused by the Portuguese state in his own period.

 Europeans in India
Columbus presumed that because the earth is round he would eventually get to India while sailing westwards, instead he found the continent of America whose existence was not known then to the Europeans.
Even though the European powers arrived in India for commercial reasons, they also started converting local Indians to Christianity.
And so accidentally Christopher Columbus found the continent of America.

Portugal being a British ally since 1661, her possessions in India were secure.
The policy of discrimination against Hindus, however, continued until 1910.
Portuguese India experienced emigration; the Catholics among her population were partially westernized which helped them finding employment and obtain education - in British India, where the city of Bombay exercised most attraction.

 Brian Elliott's Presentation
As a boy he was infatuated with accounts of the wild beasts, wild people, and vast riches that existed in Africa.(Hart 6) At a young age, he began to study everything he could on trade, maps, scientific charts, and anything else he could find that pertained to Africa.
Next, and certainly no less important was that he wanted to establish trade with any lands that lay out there, especially if they were Christian lands, and it was assumed that India was Christian.
Thirdly, he wanted a Christian ally in its wars against the infidels.

The objective of the Portuguese in the Indian Ocean was to monopolize the trade in spices, which the Arabs, who sold them on to the Venetians, then controlled.
Their trade reached out into China and Japan, as did missionary activity, of which the Portuguese had been given the monopoly by the papacy in 1455 (confirmed in 1514).
The Portuguese can claim to have first introduced most of Africa and the East to the Europeans, founding, in the same period as the Spanish Empire in America, a multi-continental trading system somewhat in the manner of the Phoenicians or ancient Greeks.

Maharaja Sambhaji captured this fortress in 1683 during his campaign against the Portuguese in 1682-83.
Constructed long before the occupation of Salcete by the Portuguese in 1543, it was frequently attacked by the Muslim rulers of Bijapur and later by the Marathas and was rehabilitated in 1604 and 1684.
Sambhaji and the Bhonsles chieftains took it in 1683 and 1739 respectively, but the former retained it only for a month and the latter were, after a precarious tenure of two years, forced to surrender it to its former owners.

India's colonial past includes British, Portuguese and French rule in different regions, and in a nation with 18 official languages and hundreds of dialects, Indians are divided over renaming their cities.
The old Broadway song about pronunciation - "You say po-tay-to, I say po-tah-to; you say to-may-to, I say to-mah-to" - could be the refrain of most Indians, as well as other citizens of former colonial territories who are bent on dropping the westernised versions of city names.

[The first voyagers to India mistook the Hindus for Christians.] They are of tawny complexion.
Some of them have big beards and long hair, whilst others clip their hair short or shave the head, merely allowing a tuft to remain on the crown as a sign that they are Christians.
Both Prince John and Prince Manuel continued the efforts of Prince Henry to find a sea route to India, and in 1497 Manuel placed Vasco da Gama, who already had some reputation as a warrior and navigator, in charge of four vessels built especially for the expedition.

The Portuguese in India - Cambridge University Press
The book as a whole has a significance well beyond its ostensible subject since it illuminates a whole range of more general historical themes including religious conversion, race relations, the nature of pre-modern society and early colonialism, and the very beginnings of the world economy.
Dr Pearson’s volume of their history is a clear account of their activities in India and the Indian Ocean from the sixteenth century onwards written squarely from an Indian point of view.
Laying particular stress on social, economic and religious interaction between Portuguese and Indians, the author argues that the Portuguese in fact had a more limited impact on everyday life in India than is sometimes supposed.
