 Encyclopedia: Politics of Northern Ireland
The Ulster Unionists were historically a cross-class massenpartei who formed the government of Northern Ireland from its creation until 1972, although since the rise of the DUP in the 1970s their support has been more middle-class.
Northern Ireland was covered by the ice sheet for most of the last ice age and on numerous previous occasions, the legacy of which can be seen in the extensive coverage of drumlins in Counties Fermanagh, Armagh, Antrim and particularly Down.
Ireland was partitioned in 1921 under the terms of the Government of Ireland Act 1920 between Northern Ireland and Southern Ireland (which became the Irish Free State in 1922).

CFR Publications: Prospects for the Peace Process in Northern Ireland
The reason, of course, that there is such a concentration is because of the fact that Sinn Fein, because of their size, have a possibility of getting into the government of part of the United Kingdom--getting into the government of Northern Ireland.
And while Nigel has given a catalogue of what that means, what it means, at the end of the day, to only individual people in Northern Ireland is that we wouldn't have in government people who at nighttime are plotting to maim and to murder.
The attempt, therefore, by the use of violence is one to, if you like, push the democratic will of the people of Northern Ireland to one side and to make it untenable, bringing war weariness on the community and, at the same time, make it less desirable for the partner in the union.

 Bryne & Carter: Social Cubism
Parnell's call of "Home Rule for Ireland," was interpreted by Ulster Protestants as "Rome Rule" because the religious cleavage became superimposed on the national question.
In Northern Ireland, persistent paramilitary violence in the form of local punishment beatings and shootings since the Fall 1994 cease-fires indicates that the future course of a fragile peace process could be marked by a return to violence.
In Northern Ireland, Catholics (primarily of Gaelic descent) remain a minority, although their relative size is growing due to birth rates that exceed those of Protestants.

spiked-politics Article Northern Ireland's war of words
The aim was to get Northern Ireland moving again, following the suspension of the devolved assembly in October 2002 amid allegations of an IRA spy ring at the heart of Stormont.
Sinn Fein and the IRA once claimed to be the 'legitimate government' of Ireland, the true heirs of the 1916 declaration of an Irish Republic, whose aim was to get British forces out of the Six Counties.
Recent events confirm that the nationalist and Unionist communities have been disenfranchised from political life, left outside while the political parties get on with the process of peace.

Ms. Magazine DemocraShe: Changing the face of politics in Northern Ireland
When businesswoman, fundraiser and mother of two Maureen Murray began planning a dinner party in honor of Sinn Féin leader Gerry Adams, she had no idea the positive impact her political soiree would have on the future of women in troubled Northern Ireland.
Murray wasted no time in hiring the former deputy director of research from EMILY’s List, Alex Lange, who suggested Bronagh Hinds, a founder of the Women’s Coalition and staunch advocate of women in public life, to head the Northern Ireland Women’s Initiative.
That night, seeds were sown for the New York-based Northern Ireland Women’s Initiative (NIWI) and the DemocraShe program, a pioneering venture that six years later continues to open political doors for increasing numbers of women in Northern Ireland.

 PROGRESSING POLITICS in NORTHERN IRELAND
It is a huge setback for those of us who look to the agreement as providing the basis for a new beginning in Ireland in terms of resolving our historic quarrel.
A far better course is to continue exposing IRA criminality and to insist to Sinn Fein and the IRA that they have to live by the same laws as the rest of us.
The key reason for that crisis is no longer unionist prevarication, delay or unwillingness to enter the institutions established under that agreement.

 Ireland and Northern Ireland
I wrote an article on Northern Ireland based on an interview I did with Billy Hutchinson of the Progressive Unionist Party in April 1995.
It is dedicated to preserving the status quo, or more expressely, its own power in Northern Ireland, regardless of the consequences for the people of Northern Ireland, Nationalist or Unionist.
Go here if you really want to see what it is like to live in the 17th Century and the period of the "Thirty Years War." Even in the face of the deaths of innocents he continues to shout about "No Surrender" without offering the people of Northern Ireland any viable alternative.

With the coming of the H-Block blanket protests and hunger strikes by IRA men over political status in the late 1970s and early 1980s, republicans searched for ways to express their position amid media "self censorship", said Mr Devenney.

Peter's Guide To Politics in Northern Ireland
Despite being a part of Ireland's "Republican Party" the Taoiseach has always tried to be bi-partisan on Northern Ireland, often laying the blame for various impasses on the IRA and Sinn Fein which has often made him unpopular in the Nationalist community.
Initially partition was resented by all Irish leaders and politicans and each general election was paritally fought on the issue of ending partition but gradually that faded although successive Irish governments were still Republican in attitudes towards Northern Ireland.
He is a firm believer in the All-Ireland dimension to the Agreement and his annoyance was evident when David Trimble refused to let the Sinn Fein ministers attend North-South meetings.

Nine Fine Irishmen at New York-New York Hotel & Casino, Las Vegas
Though they were all members of the Confederates, the principal organisation of the Young Ireland movement, even their political ideas spanned a wide spectrum of beliefs.
Returned to Ireland and made a speech rejecting his revolutionary past "Politically we were a pack of fools, but we were honest in our folly and no man need blush at forty for the follies of one and twenty unless he still perseveres in them."
These nine whose destinies became interwoven in the revolutionary activities in Ireland of 1848 were men of hugely varying backgrounds, temperaments and character.
