Topic: Pertinax

 Pertinax, Emperor Elvis
Pertinax got wind of the plot and rushed back to Rome where he addressed the Senate, saying that it was the fault of palace freedmen that the treasury cupboard was bare and that the Praetorians were attempting a coup.
Pertinax's career suffered for a short time, but he was one of the army's best generals, and so he was called up again to suppress a revolt in Britain, an assignment which, not incidentally, also sent him far from the Roman political scene.
While Pertinax was down in Ostia inspecting Rome's grain supply, Laetus, a former ally of Pertinax in the plot to kill Commodus, now conspired with the Praetorians to oust Pertinax.

This incited the others who fell upon Pertinax; the emperor's head was put on a lance and carried through the streets of the city to the camp.
Several prætorians were suspected of being members of the conspiracy; Lætus had these put to death without any trial and made the soldiers believe that it was done by imperial command.
On account of a conspiracy against Commodus many innocent persons, including Pertinax, were banished.

The Decline And Fall Of The Roman Empire IV
Pertinax found a nobler way of condemning his predecessor's memory; by the contrast of his own virtues with the vices of Commodus.
The gates were thrown open by their companions upon guard; and by the domestics of the old court, who had already formed a secret Conspiracy against the life of the too virtuous emperor.
Such an uniform conduct had already secured to Pertinax the noblest reward of a sovereign, the love and esteem of his people.

 193: Severus and Traditional Auctoritas
However nowhere is he joined with those leaders who were publicly associated with Pertinax and his continual public appeals to the memory of the fallen emperor indicate that he did not feel their support was certain.
The support that the Antonine aristocracy could organize is seen immediately after Commodus' murder, with a large crowd clamoring for Pertinax when he went before the troops at the pratorian camp.
The last years of Commodus' reign had left the political situation in Rome in such a shambles that no person or group was able to put together a government with enough auctoritas to retain power in the fashion that was customary in the principate.

Probably, there was no conspiracy at all, especially since Pertinax had not yet chosen his successor.
It was said that only a few days before, the emperor had said to some of his courtiers that he wanted Didius Julianus to be regarded with due respect, because he had been his colleague and would be his successor.
The official account of the murder was that Commodus threatened his relatives and/or courtiers, that they defended themselves, and that did not start to look for a worthy successor before the early hours of 1 January 193.

Pertinax - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Pertinax must have been aware of the danger he faced by assuming the purple, for he refused to use imperial titles for either his wife or son, thus protecting them from the aftermath of his own assassination.
He narrowly averted one conspiracy by a group to replace him with the consul Sosius Falco, but a second conspiracy ended with his assassination by members of the Praetorian Guard.
After his entry to Rome, Septimius recognized Pertinax as a legitimate emperor, executed the soldiers who killed him, and not only pressured the Senate to provide for him a state funeral, but for some time held games on the anniversary of Pertinax's ascension and his birthday.

 Liberty and Power
George Washington once famously said, "government is all power." By this he demonstrated that he understood what Pertinax, Tom Bell, and all the current crop of the Libertarian Party don't.
It seems that after the corrupt and tryannical reign of Commodus was cut short by an assassination by his praetorian guards, Pertinax was asked to wear the Purple.
This all sounds good to those of libertarian leanings, but the rest of the story highlights why the Libertarian Party is now nothing more than a dangerous indulgence by the naive and childish.

After Commodus was assassinated, Laetus and Eclectus took Helvius Pertinax, 66, to the praetorian camp, where he promised the guards a donative of 12,000 sesterces each.
The Senate and people loathed Julianus, because they believed Pertinax was reforming the abuses of the Commodus era, and many believed the soldiers killed Pertinax for money.
Severus executed the praetorians, who had murdered Pertinax, and dismissed the guards, who had failed to prevent this.

Problem with this interpretation: If "Pertinax" refers to emperor Pertinax (born Publius Helvius), then who is the Marcus Aurelius Antoninus at the end of the inscription.
The "Pertinax" of this inscription is in fact Septimus Severus, and the Marcus Aurelius Antoninus Caesar at the end of the inscription actually is Severus's son Caracalla, who became Marcus Aurelius Antoninus Caesar in 195, two years after Pertinax's death.
A good guess would be Caracalla, who also used the "Marcus Aurelius Antoninus" name.

Julianus won, promising 25,000 sestertii per man. Meanwhile, Septimius Severus, who on the death of Pertinax had been acclaimed emperor by his troops, marched on Rome, where the Senate abandoned and condemned Julianus.
