Atlantic Ocean - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Due to the Coriolis effect, water in the North Atlantic circulates in a clockwise direction, whereas water circulation in the South Atlantic is counter clockwise.
The surface is usually covered with sea ice in the Labrador Sea, Denmark Strait, and Baltic Sea from October to June.
The Bermuda Triangle is popularly believed to be the site of numerous aviation and shipping incidents, due to unexplained and supposedly mysterious causes, but coastguard records do not support this belief.

North: Landscape of the Imagination / Le Nord: paysage imaginaire
The subject of the medieval Norse in North America, however, was largely played up in the press, where any discovery or claim of discovery roused keen public enthusiasm.
On the other were those who considered the sagas to be fantastic stories, or to reflect at most a brief Norse foray to the eastern coast of the continent.
Eric the Red's exploration of Greenland about AD 980 arose from such circumstances, and the immigrants who followed him to establish colonies on the southwestern coast of the island soon swelled the population to an estimated 3,000 people.

 R-in-NATO, 4th gen.
The Atlantic democracies, he concluded, were for better or worse the leading powers of the world -- better when they were united, because then they led the world toward unity; worse when they were divided, because then they led the world toward chaos.
The history of the three generations of Atlantic alliance shows why it is not unreasonable to think that Russia could be a member in its fourth generation.
At that time, the Atlantic alliance was engaged in a world war against German power.

Metropole Paris - 'NAO' Weather In France!
What is not clear is why the NAO has become more positive over the last 30 years and there is some speculation that this may be a sign of human induced global warming.
He also suggested I contact David Stephenson in Toulouse for the true facts about 'NAO' - so that readers readers intending to visit Europe in order to escape the caprices of 'El Niño' would not be stricken by panic on encountering 'NAO' here.
This is welcome news because we can now blame it on foreign sources rather than France 2 TV.

This provision was intended so that if the USSR and its allies launched an attack against any of the NATO members, it would be treated as if it was an attack on all member states.
This comes in response to the September 11, 2001 Terrorist Attack against the United States.
The meetings of the North Atlantic Council are chaired by the Secretary General of NATO and, when decisions have to be made, action is agreed upon on the basis of unanimity and common accord.

Also in 1558 Nicolo Zeno produced an influential map of the North Atlantic, supposedly based on ocean voyages by members of the family in the 1380s, although we have no other evidence of such travels.
It was based on a voyage his brother had undertaken in 1524 for France, along the east coast of North America.
This model too was copied by mapmakers for many years.

 NRDC: North Atlantic Swordfish
But a 30-month campaign by NRDC and SeaWeb brought new fishing restrictions, and after just a few years under the new regime, North Atlantic swordfish populations have recovered to 94 percent of levels considered healthy.
In 1997, the North Atlantic swordfish was on its way to being wiped out, the victim of years of overfishing and mismanagement.
Among the chefs participating in the campaign was Nora Pouillon of Restaurant Nora and Asia Nora in Washington, D.C. "When SeaWeb and NRDC first approached me about this campaign, I knew I had to participate," she said.

This group, under the leadership of A. Timmermann, has begun its work in the area of modeling long-period paleoclimate variability as of 4/1/2001.
Approximately two thirds of the net transport of North Atlantic Deep Water originate in this area, either through entrainment of near-bottom overflow water masses from the Iceland Basin and Norwegian Sea, or as a result of deep wintertime convection processes in the Labrador Sea and ultimately Irminger Sea.

 OML: Neptune's Realm: Currents
Running less than a hundred miles offshore, one would believe that the Gulf Stream warms the east coast of the United States as it does for the west coast of the United Kingdom, Europe, and Norway.
But as European ships left the familiar shores of continental Europe and their trade routes in the Mediterranean to venture out into the Sea of Darkness, or Great Green Sea of Gloom, as Arab geographers called the Atlantic Ocean, they encountered great rivers within the sea--the ocean currents.
But it remained until nearly the end of the eighteenth century before the general path of the Gulf Stream was worked out, and realized to be one part of the large gyre of current in the North Atlantic.

Truman Library - North Atlantic Treaty
The North Atlantic Treaty--the first peacetime military alliance ever concluded by the United States--was signed by the foreign ministers of the twelve signatory nations on April 4, 1949.
During lengthy hearings before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee many witnesses expressed concern and dismay at the prospect that the United States would abandon a tradition of nonentanglement with Europe that was as old as the Republic, and others worried that the proposed military alliance would conflict with the purposes of the United Nations.

 The North Atlantic Drift Current
Generally, the NADC originates from the Gulf Stream-North Atlantic Current system and from the northern Sargasso Sea.
The N. Atlantic drift is the broad, northward flow of surface waters that replaces the sinking waters in the N. Atlantic polar seas.
The path of the NADC is clearly seen in the warming of the air over the western North Atlantic extending eastwards-and intensifying-into the Norwegian Sea (Rossby, 1996).
