 Israel's Negev Desert
Laid out before it are the settlements of Yotvata, Grofit, Ketura and Lotan, patches of green against the tawny desert earth.
Each lives a double life as farm and sentinel, laying claim to the land, ironically, by the ancient Arab right of occupancy.
At a lookout point on Mt. Hizkiyahu, the face of an Israeli soldier is a reminder of the struggle of the Jews to return to this land they have longed for across centuries.

 The Desert
In 1947 and 1948, when the boundaries of the Jewish and Arab states were being debated by diplomats, David Ben-Gurion made it clear the Negev must be part of the Jewish state.
He believed what he said and made his home there, joining Kibbutz Sde Boker in 1953.
In March 1949, during Israel’s War of Independence, the Israeli army vanquished the Egyptians in the desert campaign and captured the Negev for the State of Israel.

 Israel's Negev Desert
Having such poor conditions, the Negev was largely undeveloped and sparsely populated during Israel's first five decades.
Rarely does one find a country so small with landscapes so varied as in Israel.
Following a visit to Palestine in 1867, Mark Twain described the Negev Desert in his book "The Innocents Abroad" as "a desolation that not even imagination can grace with the pomp of life and action…".

 Negev Desert Botanical Garden
Comparatively small, the Negev has had, however, an intriguing history of settlers, occupiers and passers through including Nabateans, Romans, Byzantines, Ottomans, British, Bedouin and Israelis.
A Negev botanical garden will also provide great opportunities for learning at secondary and primary school levels and would also be a major attraction for local people and Israeli and foreign tourists alike.
This will commence with meetings with the Ramat Hanegev Regional Council during April 2000.

In the Bible, locusts were the eighth of 10 plagues that God inflicted on the ancient Egyptians before Pharaoh, their leader, let the Israelites go.
Locusts ventured across the Negev desert as far north as the Dead Sea where farmers worried that larger numbers of insects said to be heading their way might eat through their crops.

The main focus of this exhibit is to display aspects of the transition of Bedouin from nomadic tribes to city dwellers, as part of an effort by the Israeli government to settle Bedouin in permanent settlements.
The faculty of Health Science at the Ben Gurion University is instrumental in providing health care to Bedouin still living in tents scattered around the Negev desert, and part of this exhibit is dedicated to the staff of the health care van which patrols the desert to provide medical attention to those who need it.

In the present set of experiments no germination was found, even after more than 73 days of wetting, of freshly harvested caryopses (grains) of Hordeum spontaneum in their spikelets (the dispersal unit) which were harvested on 3 May, 1992 near Sede Boker in the Negev Desert Highlands.
This suggests that genetic factors underlie the above results.

In chapter 8 we shall be told that Judith was also of the tribe of Simeon.
Now Simeon was one of the southernmost tribes of Judah, with enclaves down even in the Negev desert (I Chronicles 4:28).
