Nebuchadrezzar II - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
He is traditionally called "Nebuchadnezzar the Great", but his destruction of temples in Jerusalem and the conquest of Judah caused his vilification in Judaic tradition and in the Bible, causing him to be interpreted very differently by western Christians and Jews than in contemporary Iraq, where he is glorified as a historic leader.
In the second year of his reign (evidently counting from his conquest of the Jews), Nebuchadrezzar dreams of a huge image made of various materials (gold, copper, iron, etc).
During the last century of Niniveh's existence, Babylon had been greatly devastated, not only at the hands of Sennacherib and Assurbanipal, but also as a result of her ever renewed rebellions.

Psammetichus II's campaign, that was perhaps more peaceful then otherwise, though recorded as a traditional military campaign, encouraged Zedekiah to embark upon a rebellion that ultimately proved to be catastrophic for Jerusalem when the city fell in 587 BC.
However, after his son, Jehoiachin succeeded him in 598, Jerusalem was almost immediately recaptured by Nebuchadrezzar II, who pillaged the temple and deported the new Judah ruler to Babylon, replacing him with Zedekiah, Jehoiachin's uncle.
Curiously, however, Psammetichus II does not appear to have capitalized much on his victory.

Proof that Tishri reckoning was employed in Judah may be found by comparing II Kings 22:3 with 23:23, where the discovery of the law by Hilkiah and the subsequent passover in Nisan, which must have occurred several months later, are both dated in the 18th year of Josiah.
