This page is about the geography and history of the island group in Indonesia — for the political entities encompassing the islands, see Maluku (Indonesian province) and North Maluku.
The commencement of Indonesian transmigration of (mainly) Javanese populations to the outer islands (including Maluku) during the 1960s is thought to have aggravated independence and issues of religious / ethnic politics.
With the declaration of a unitary republic of Indonesia in 1950 to replace the federal state, the South Moluccas (Maluku Selatan) attempted to secede.

 Moluccas --  Encyclopædia Britannica
First proposed in 1902 as a replacement for Wallace's Line (q.v.) and modified by many subsequent investigators, Weber's Line extends from the Indian Ocean through the Timor Sea east of Timor, northward through the Molucca Sea...
Many of the changes that define this linguistic group cover most of the languages but do not reach the geographic extremes, and the group has therefore been questioned by some scholars.
The Central Malayo-Polynesian languages are found throughout much of eastern Indonesia, including the Lesser Sunda Islands from Sumbawa through Timor, and most of the Moluccas.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Ferdinand Magellan
This and an unfavourable report that had been made upon him by Almeida led to his disgrace with the king.
As he could not hope to arouse interest for the carrying out of his plans in Portugal, and was himself, moreover misjudged and ignored, he renounced his nationality and offered his services to Spain.
Condemned to inactivity and checked in his desire for personal distinction, he once more devoted himself to studies and projects to which he was mainly stimulated by the reports of the recently discovered Moluccas sent by his friend Serrão.
