Toledo War - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A common (but unsubstantiated) legend claims that Ohioans gave Michigan its nickname, "The Wolverine State", because Michiganders were vicious and bloodthirsty during the Toledo War.
The wolverine is not a common sight in Michigan, having been extirpated from the state in the early 1800s.
The U.S. Congress agreed to grant Michigan statehood in 1836, but only if it relinquished its claim to the disputed tract.

Michigan Territory - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Following the American Revolutionary War, several states had competing claims on land in the region.
Other states also claimed portions of what was to become Michigan, including New York, Connecticut, and Massachusetts.
Michigan Territory was an organized territory of the United States in the early 19th century, between June 30, 1805 and January 26, 1837, at which point it became Michigan, the 26th state of the Union.

 Michigan History
From its first discovery, about 1610, until 1763, the territory was claimed, or governed by the French.
The British government, the violation of the treaty, became possession of the military posts of the territory, and it did not come into actual American possession until July 11, 1796.
It was then ceded to Great Britain, and in 1783, at the close of the war of the Revolution, was transferred to the United States.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Detroit, Michigan
Preparations had been under way even then to raise Detroit to a bishopric, of which, had he lived, he would probably have received the mitre.
He had five opponents at the polls, but many non-Catholics voted for him, which outweighed the bitter opposition of a number of members of his parish led by one of the trustees who had long been at enmity with him.
Father Richard prepared for him a statement of the condition of the Territory, in which he then estimated there were about 6000 Catholics with five churches and two priests — himself and his assistant.

Michigan’s strong antislavery movement, its leadership in public education, and the dominance of its Republican Party in state politics were all related to the New England background of its settlers.
Mason and the territorial legislature, however, claimed that Congress could not deny Michigan’s right to statehood and called for the election of a state constitutional convention.
Michigan Senator Zachariah Chandler was nationally known during and after the Civil War for his support of a radical policy for Reconstruction in the South.

The 1836 Presidential election was close at hand, and the National Democratic Party looked forward to Ohio’s electoral votes.

Toledo War: battle between Michigan and Ohio
The most bizarre war in American history was the Toledo War that had no mortal casualties because the militias could not find each other.
Major Stickney was subjected to the humiliation of being tied to his horse for a trip to a Michigan jail.
The young hotheaded territorial governor of Michigan, Stephens T. Mason, who was appointed as governor at the age of only 19 by President Andrew Jackson, angrily responded by sending the Michigan militia south to claim the Toledo Strip.

Publicity for 1825 map encouraged settlement of southeast Michigan
Like the boundaries of their lands, however, Michigan’s French inhabitants were rapidly being engulfed by the settlers of the 1820s.
This approach gave land seekers from the Eastern states and abroad confidence to select land on which to reestablish their lives.
Like many of the sectional maps of other developing territories published over the next half-century or more, Risdon’s work focused not just on topographical or political details, but showed how the land was divided for settlement.

 Evolution of Northwest Territory
In Michigan Territory, the residents of the lower peninsula were eager to become a state and were apparently also eager to jettison the area west of the eastern end of the upper peninsula.
Thomas Jefferson's 1784 proposal for names of the states to be formed out of this area are listed here with an accompanying map.
In 1824, areas I, J1 and K (and possibly some of J2) were proposed for the new state – with the remainder (including areas L-P with the addition of E!) to be organized as Chippewa Territory.
