Topic: The Mexican

Historical Text Archive: Articles: Mexican Anticlerics, Bishops, Cristeros, and the Devout during the ...
Politically, the government's interpretation of events --that the Mexican Revolution defended itself against a reactionary clergy allied with prerevolutionary elites, both of which were trying to block progress and justice and were willing to invoke foreign intervention--has assumed greater importance as the Revolution became institutionalized and less revolutionary.
The cristeros were not as concerned about the ideological questions involved as they were about preserving what they believed to be their rights.
Although he is more sympathetic toward the Mexican government, Larin denies that it was anything more than a bourgeois government.

 The Mexican War
The Mexicans did not attack because the Centralist government was collapsing.
Many Centralists believed that abolitionists' objections to the war would demoralize the United States, and some Centralists believed a Mexican invasion would be supported by a massive slave uprising.
Simply stated, a dictatorial Centralist government in Mexico began the war because of the U.S. annexation (1845) of Texas, which Mexico continued to claim despite the establishment of the independent republic of Texas 10 years before.

The History Guy: The U.S.-Mexican War (1846-1848)
Both nations sent troops to enforce the competing claims, and a tense standoff ensued.
The fact that most of those areas already had people living upon them was usually ignored, with the attitude that democratic English-speaking America, with its high ideals and Protestant Christian ethics, would do a better job of running things than the Native Americans or Spanish-speaking Catholic Mexicans.
The belief that the U.S. basically had a God-given right to occupy and "civilize" the whole continent gained favor as more and more Americans settled the western lands.

LTG: Mexico's Plans for the U.S.
This article has a thorough, stunning account of Mexican hypocrisy around immigration — Mexico's own laws are anti-bilingual and pro-sovereignty (Mexico's, that is), with no benefits for illegals, who are summarily deported.
In the case of the former Yugoslavia, revanchism was the excuse for genocide.
As government professor George Grayson remarks, "If Singapore could lease Mexico for 20 years, Americans soonwould be complaining about the 'colossus of the South.'" LTG believes that the Mexican people will not shake off their shackles of economic repression until the USA closes down the border to force the long overdue social and economic changes.

 Mexican Immigration
Mexican immigration to the United States is at once paradigmatic of a new globalized immigration system—dominated by large numbers of peoples from the “south” moving to wealthier centers in the “north”—and unique.
First, a growing body of research suggests that economic restructuring and the sociocultural changes taking place in the Americas virtually insure that Mexican immigration to the United States will be a long-term phenomenon.
This underscores the economic clout that the Mexican-origin population in the U.S. has in Mexico.

 P. Rich & L. G. De Los Reyes, "Problems in the Historiography of Mexican Freemasonry, Part I"
In respects, Poinsett's decision to employ Masonry as a tool of his interventionist policies was the start of that long involvement of Masonry with Mexican politics which has been regarded so ambiguously by scholars as far as its good and bad effects have been concerned.
What _is_ true is that a predominantly Protestant and democratic United States was suspicious of what had been a narrowly Catholic and aristocratic neighbor, wary of increasing British presence in Mexico, and alarmed about Mexican intentions in Cuba.
The ramifications of this apparently minor matter of which Masonic ritual and obedience would reverberate for more than a century.

 Mexican-American War
Refuting this "Mexico's Fault" theory even more is the fact that the government of Mexico at this time was in a period of chaos (Garraty and Gay 811).
The question of Texan annexation would not have come up if there had not already been Americans settling and causing problems (from the Mexican perspective) in Texas.
The forward thinking settlers simply presumed that America would eventually assume their new lands.

MEXonline.com - Hildago's Call for Mexican Independence - Grito de Dolores
Every year at midnight on September 15, Mexicans shout the grito, honoring the crucial, impulsive action that was the catalyst for the country's bloody struggle for independence from Spain.
The gachupines who claimed authority under Bonaparte’s rule would be driven out of Mexico.
The nucleus of this movement was a group of intellectuals in Querétaro led by the corregidor of Querétaro, his wife and a group of army officers distinguished by the adventurous Ignacio Allende.

Mexican War and the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo - 1848
These claims were preposterous, coming from a conquered country, and there was nothing left for Scott to do but to resume military operations.
In return, the United States paid Mexico $15,000,000 cash and assumed some $3,250,000 more in claims of American citizens on the Mexican government.
From the beginning of the war Polk had been negotiating for peace.

Historical Text Archive: Articles: The Personal History of Pancho Villa and Its Effects on Mexican His...
Villa had long been removed from the political spotlight; he did not pose a threat to the current regime nor did he have any plans of a revolt.
The assassination of Villa was indicative of the Mexican political system.
Regardless of his political affiliations, Villa always seemed to place the needs of the Mexican people at the top of his agenda.

Growing social inequalities, restricted freedom of the press, and his insistence to be reelected for a fifth term led to massive protests.
This Second Mexican Empire was fought off by then-president of the Republic, the Zapotec Benito Juárez, with diplomatic and logistical support from the United States and the military expertise of General Porfirio Díaz.

 Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna
This was the last effort of Spain against Mexico, a convulsive effort which was near success in consequence of the wildness which had animated it, and against which it was impossible to provide.
The campaign was undertaken in obedience to an act of the Mexican congress, which ordered no quarter to be given, and that the terms allowed by Urrea were a violation of this law.
He was under no apprehension of a storm, for no man in Mexico would lift, a hand against a consecrated building, and famine alone could force him to submit to his assailants.

And it seems that almost any excuse is good enough to have a party.
In 1929 former President General Plutarco Elías Calles created the National Revolutionary Party (PNR) which was restructured several times and became the Institutional Revolutionary Party in 1946.
However, the social unrest and the political opposition to the regime of Porfirio Díaz triggered the Mexican Revolution.

 La Malinche (article)
Mexicans just walk right by, shunning the place because of its historical associations and popular fears of the ghosts that supposedly stalk any visitors who dare to go inside.
Some Mexican feminists say she is even at the root of much of the disdain Mexican men display toward Mexican women, expressed in the country's high rates of infidelity and domestic violence.
But even though Mexican and Mexican-American intellectuals have begun to rethink her meaning, La Malinche is for the most part portrayed as the perpetrator of Mexico's original sin and as a cultural metaphor for all that is wrong with Mexico.

 Mexican Independence
The stage for the upheaval and dissatisfaction that gave rise to Mexican independence was set by political and economic changes in Europe and its American colonies of the late 18th and 19th centuries.
In an armed attack on the palace, Peninsulares arrested Iturrigaray and replaced him with puppet Pedro Garibay after which they carried out bloody reprisals against Criollos who were suspected of disloyalty.
From its inception the colonial government of New Spain was dominated by Spanish born Peninsulares or Guachapins, who held most leadership positions in the church and government, in contrast to Mexican-born Criollos (Creoles) who were the ten to one majority.

“Mexican food can become the only thing Americans know about Mexico,” notes Buffington, saying that he hopes his encyclopedia entries about Mexican society and culture will build upon what the reader may know and make it more complex.
In addition to those “antagonistic forces”—a cultural mix but at the hand of foreign conquerors—another inherent contradiction in Mexican society is its strong Catholic tradition but traditionally anti-clerical government, Buffington notes.
