 Mickey Marcus
During that time, Marcus was put in charge of planning how to sustain the starving millions in areas liberated by the Allies, and clearing out the Nazi concentration camps.
A few hours before the cessation of hostilities on June 11, 1948 he left his position late at night near Jerusalem, and was confronted by a nervous young Israeli soldier who spoke no English who demanded that Marcus reveal his identity.
As a mostly assimilated English-speaking American Jew, Marcus knew very little Hebrew.

William R. Nifong, Promises Past: Marcus Atilius Regulus and the Dialogue of Natural Law, 49 Duke L. J. 1077 (2000)
Silius Italicus reports that when Regulus entered the chamber he immediately invoked the past perfidy of the enemy as grounds for denial: "Foil their knavish tricks, and teach a nation that delights in deceit how much, though I be a prisoner, is still left to Rome.
Third, the fact that Regulus' oath had been given by a captive to an enemy -- perhaps even coerced -- is of no consequence, since force could not have prevailed against a man of Regulus' mettle.
Finally, there is Salvator Rosa's The Death of Marcus Atilius Regulus (1652).

 Regulus
They allowed Regulus to accompany the ambassadors on the promise that he would return to Rome if their proposals were declined, thinking that he would persuade his countrymen to agree to an exchange of prisoners in order to obtain his own liberty.
Many writers supposed that it was invented in order to excuse the cruelties perpetrated by the family of Regulus on the Carthaginian prisoners committed to their custody.
There they were attacked by Regulus, and defeated at Adys, near Carthage with great loss; 15,000 men are said to have been killed in battle, and 5000 men with 18 elephants to have been taken.

 Marcus Atilius Regulus biography
For some time he was victorious in every encounter, but at last (255 B.C.) suffered a total defeat; 30,000 Romans were left dead on the field, about 2000 fled and took shelter in Clypea, and Regulus, with 500 more, was taken prisoner.
Regulus remained in captivity for five years, but, when fresh reverses induced the Carthaginians to solicit peace, he was released on parole and sent to Rome in company with the Punic envoys.
The common story is that he was placed in a cask or chest stuck full of nails with the points projecting inward and rolled about till he expired; when the news of this event reached Rome, retaliations equally atrocious, it is said, were committed on two of the noblest Carthaginian prisoners.
