Louisiana Purchase - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Spain also held that the purchase was illegal; because the treaty handing Louisiana to the French had stipulated the French were not allowed to hand it over to a third power, and because Napoleon had not adhered to his part of the treaty (giving a kingdom in Italy to the brother-in-law of king Carlos IV).
A strong America would be a buffer against Britain when the inevitable showdown came (there is also the possibility that he wished to encourage the USA to assist with his embargo on strategic resources reaching the British, the Continental policy).
Napoleon added the money from the sale of the Louisiana territory to his massive war chest and began his plans to control the European continent.

 Colonial Louisiana
Although most settlers in Louisiana were of the Catholic faith, a few were Protestants or Sephardic Jews.
Among the many ethnic groups in colonial Louisiana were people of French, Canadian, Spanish, Latin American, Anglo, German, and African descent.
This practice did not work well in Louisiana at first, however, because Louisiana had too few desirable products to export and too few people to exploit what natural resources existed.

 Louisiana Redbones
The purpose of this paper is to pull together the scant writings on the Louisiana Redbones and to present from those materials an account of their arrival in Louisiana, where they settled and how they lived.
The state has avoided large scale massacres, deportations or forced migrations of its ethnic groups such as that which led to the "Trail of Tears." Reasons for this relatively benign treatment of minority groups are varied and speculative.
Tommy Johnson has interviewed members of the Cloud family who are members of the Louisiana Redbone community.

Many Louisiana planters were among the wealthiest men in America.
The discovery of sulphur in 1869 and oil in 1901, coupled with the rise of forestry sent the state on a new wave of economic growth.
The state has been governed under 10 different flags beginning in 1541 with Hernando de Soto's claim of the region for Spain.

 Louisiana Purchase: Historical Perspectives, 1682-1815
Louisiana was a richly multi-cultural frontier in which different ethnic groups jostled for power and primacy.
When Spain gained control of Louisiana in 1762, its policies with regard to land grants were markedly different from those of the French regime.
The Louisiana Purchase of 1803 did not begin Anglo-American immigration into the area, it simply legitimized a process that had begun more than a decade earlier (Wall, p.

Several of the scenes were clearly meant to be viewed in 3D and hence the footage appears blurry in black-and-white.
The movie's content amounts to an hour-long travelogue for Louisiana, with lots of historical information to make a more 'scholarly' product.
I have seen this movie and would like to comment on it

Louisiana Secretary of State/Museums/Old State Capitol/Louisiana Purchase - What IS?
By the 1840's, most Americans fervently believed that it was the destiny of the nation to extend from sea to sea.
Spanish forces in Louisiana assisted the new United States in the War for American Independence.
Debate over the purchase and over the addition of an "alien population" to the United States was intense with the New England states eager to condemn the acquisition of Louisiana and the frontier states of the South and West just as eager to defend it.

 Louisiana Purchase
Louisiana had been claimed for France by LaSalle in 1682 and named to honor Louis XIV.
This was a matter of concern to the president; Spain was a declining power and offered no threat to the United States.
Napoleon was at war with Britain and thought it unwise to court distraction by having to defend New Orleans.

 Headline News - Louisiana Purchase
The story of the way in which the United States acquired Louisiana is complicated, involving power politics, intrigue and suspicion.
Napoleon also considered the temper of the United States, where sentiment was growing against France and stronger ties with Great Britain were being considered.
Since the Louisiana Territory had never officially been turned over to the French, the Spanish took down their flag, and the French raised theirs.

Machanicks and others who lived in towns, useful indeed to the government, had no idea of forfeiting their right, for want of occupying the particular tracts conceded to them; if claims of those discriptions are now to be rejected, under the 4th Sec.

MILESTONE HISTORIC DOCUMENTS - THE LOUISIANA PURCHASE TREATY
Jefferson knew that acquiring the very heart of the American continent would prove to be the key to the future of the United States.
However, Jefferson temporarily set aside his idealism to tell his supporters in Congress that "what is practicable must often control what is pure theory." The majority agreed.
As a result, generations of Americans for nearly 200 years have been the beneficiaries of Jefferson’s noble vision of America and his efforts at expanding the continent.

Chalmette : The Battle for New Orleans and How the British Nearly Stole the Louisiana Territory
The details of the units and their commanders, the tactics, the phases of the conflict are clearly told, the various movements and maneuvers leading up to the battle, as well as the aftermath--jubilation in New Orleans and the United States, homeward sail for the stunned British, astonishment in Europe.
This dimension of the War of 1812 is told more clearly in Charles Patton's "Chalmette" than in most accounts of the Battle of New Orleans.
The real significance of this victory, however, lies in the blocking of the British intent to wrest the Louisiana Purchase territory from the US and to control the Mississippi River, linking New Orleans and Canada in British hands.

 Louisiana Territory Legislative Journal
HISTORY: In 1804, Congress passed an act to organize the newly-acquired Louisiana Territory, dividing it into two parts, one to be called the Territory of Orleans, the other the District of Louisiana; the latter was changed to Louisiana Territory in 1805.
The Louisiana Territory was divided into five sub-districts, each of which was to have a commandant or lieutenant governor.
In 1812, the legislature changed the name of the territory to “Missouri.” Edward Hempstead, clerk of the legislature of the Louisiana Territory, later became the first delegate in Congress from Missouri Territory.
