"Lawrence of Arabia" is a superbly crafted film biography of one of the great men of the early twentieth century.
On a final note, the first time I saw "Lawrence of Arabia" about 20 years ago at a repertory movie-house, about three-quarters of the way through it the theatre lights came on and the theatre manager came out and told the audience that they were missing the last two reels of the film.
The film accurately shows that only Westerners thought of Arabs as 'Arabs.' Paraphrasing the character of Antony Quinn's response when Lawrence proposes that all 'Arabs' should be united: 'I know of Hawitat and Hashemites, but Arabs?

For those people who watch films for the artistry and escape that films can bring, as I do, Sir David Lean's epic masterpiece 'Lawrence Of Arabia' is essential viewing.
Unlike Dr. Zhivago and Ryan's Daughter (both magnificent films themsleves) Lawrence of Arabia manages to maintain its splendour from start to finish, with all 3 hours and 45 minutes being a lesson in the artistry of film-making.
The all-time classic film of British Army officer T.E. Lawrence who united the Arab tribes against the Turks during World War I, and became a legend in his own time.

Lawrence of Arabia (1962) is the filmic retelling of Britishman T. Lawrence's heroic, autobiographical account of his own Arabian adventure, published in "The Seven Pillars of Wisdom" (originally published with the title Revolt in the Desert).
The opening scene of the film is both a prologue and an epilogue, depicting Lieutenant T. Lawrence's (Peter O'Toole) death in mid-May of 1935.
Lawrence remains with the soft-spoken Feisal after Brighton and Sherif Ali leave the tent, and as they speak about the Arab destiny in the face of Western warfare, the masts of the tent creak as the wind blows.

Although all of this makes Lawrence of Arabia a far cry from Rambo, it makes for a more thought-provoking epic--heroic exploits may not always stem from the most heroic of motives--filled with great dialogue, great performances, gorgeous cinematography, and a sense of history.

This is more or less the historical background for ''The Mission,'' the new film directed by Roland Joffe (''The Killing Fields''), written by Robert Bolt (''Lawrence of Arabia,'' ''Dr. Zhivago'') and shot entirely on picturesque locations in Colombia and Argentina with a cast headed by Robert De Niro and Jeremy Irons.
''The Mission,'' which was awarded the grand prize at this year's Cannes Film Festival, is a singularly lumpy sort of movie.
Irons), the chief of the mission of San Carlos, has lived in the belief that God is love and that, in turn, violence is the denial of that love.

 Who Wrote Lawrence of Arabia?
The story of the writing of both Michael Wilson's and Robert Bolt's screenplays for Lawrence of Arabia is examined in detail in a chapter of Adrian Turner's forthcoming book, The Making of David Lean's "Lawrence of Arabia, " to be published in the U.K. this fall by Dragon's World.
Turner's book also includes never-before-published documents such as Michael Wilson's "Lawrence of Arabia~ Elements and Facets of the Theme" and Robert Bolt's "Apologia," originally intended to accompany and explain the published screenplay of Lawrence of Arabia, which was never published.
In 1988, in fact, as the film was being restored, friends and family of Michael Wilson, who had died in 1978, approached the Writers Guild of America to enlist its support for formally recognizing Wilson's screenplay credit.

 Review: Lawrence of Arabia
Lawrence of Arabia recounts the larger-than-life exploits of T.E. Lawrence (Peter O'Toole), an officer in the British army serving in the Middle East during World War I, who, according to one observer, "was a poet, a scholar, and a mighty warrior.
It should be noted that Lawrence of Arabia, although based on T.E. Lawrence's memoirs, "The Seven Pillars of Wisdom", does not pretend to be a documentary, and, as such, should not be held to the same strict standards of factual accuracy.
Fortunately, in the late-80s, the original edition of Lawrence of Arabia was painstakingly restored (with the participation of David Lean and the surviving actors).

The film, which debuted elsewhere in the United States on July 28, 1962, was nominated for three additional Academy Awards as well, including a nomination going to Arthur Penn for "Best Director" (with David Lean ultimately picking up that win for his work behind the camera of "Lawrence Of Arabia").
