 Crimean Turks Adopt Latin Alphabet
As Edige Kirimal wrote in his book, "The National Struggle of the Crimean Tartars," beginning in 1921 --when the autonomous Crimean Republic was established-- the Bolsheviks tried to isolate the Crimean Tartars from the rest of the Turkic world.
This month, ethnic Tartars in Crimea, in the eastern Ukraine, decided to adopt the Latin alphabet.
This change in alphabets has been more symbolic than actual in the other newly independent states.

Repulsed from Sparta, Aristagoras went on to Athens, which had been liberated from autocratic government in the way which I will now describe.
The Gephyraei remained in the country, but were later forced by the Boeoeians to withdraw to Athens, where they have certain temples set apart for their own special use, which the other Athenians are forbidden to enter; one of them is the temple of Demeter Achaeia, in which secret rites are performed.
Although Pliny was not adverse to exaggerating, scholars do accept his evidence that Phoenicians were the first traveling salesmen.

The Cyrillic alphabet had been in use in Azerbaijan since 1939.
Azerbaijan’s position today is arguably as precarious as ever: a political resolution to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict remains elusive, the economy continues to languish and regional tension has risen recently because of disagreements over control of natural resources in disputed areas of the Caspian Sea.
For a decade prior to 1939, Azerbaijan had used Latin letters, which had replaced Arabic script in 1929.

The theory claims that a greater level of abstraction is required due to the greater economy of symbols in alphabetic systems; and this abstraction needed to interpret phonemic symbols in turn has contributed in some way to the development of the societies which use it.
However, many of these abstractions first occurred in societies which did not use an alphabet, such as the codified law of Hammurabi in Babylonia, which predated similar codes in societies with the alphabet.

Latin is probably the easiest of the older languages for speakers of English to learn, both because of their earlier relationship and because of the long use of Latin as the language of educational, ecclesiastical, legal and political affairs in western culture.
By far the greatest number of similar words are found in technical language, where English simply took over the Latin terms as industrial, political and technological affairs became more complex, especially in the last several centuries; ecclesiastical terms were taken over as England was christianized.
On the other hand, the sentence structure and number of forms require a great deal of attention, since the words of sentences are placed for their emphasis, rather than in accordance with a pattern like that of the English Subject-Verb-Object sentence.
