Democratic Kampuchea - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
On the surface, society in Democratic Kampuchea was strictly egalitarian.
Critics such as Human Rights Watch alleged that U.S. policy was contradictory; while claiming to not support the Khmer Rouge, the U.S. continually supported UN recognition of the shadow Coalition Government of Democratic Kampuchea (CGDK, formed in 1982) as the legitimate Cambodian government, despite the fact that the tripartite alliance included the Khmer Rouge.
In its general contours, Democratic Kampuchea's economic policy was similar to, and possibly inspired by, China's radical Great Leap Forward that carried out immediate collectivization of the Chinese countryside in 1958.

 Kampuchea: A Demographic Catastrophe
Overall, the UN projections for 1970 to 1980 show what Kampuchea's growth would have been in the absence of emigration and deaths from war, mass executions, and famine.
The United Nations has published estimates and projections for Kampuchea from 1950 to the year 2000 in a provisional report, Demographic Estimates and Projections for the World, Regions and Countries as Assessed in 1978.
The assumed number of war-related deaths (600,000 to 700,000) is debatable; US government sources put the figure unofficially at 600,000 to 700,000; authorities of Democratic Kampuchea say 600,000 to 800,000; Prince Sihanouk is quoted as saying 600,000.

Nevertheless, the Khmer Rouge continued to identify itself as Democratic Kampuchea even after the accord was signed.
Fragmentary accounts that reached the outside world hinted that, despite the name change, the party continued to treat refugees and peasants under its control with a harshness and an arbitrariness that showed little more concern for human rights than that of the former communist government of Cambodia.

These public pleas for support and the public concern raised by sensational, but false, documents finally provoked the Paris Mission of Democratic Kampuchea to protest that some journalists were degrading their profession and that the French held a major share of the responsibility for allowing these activities to continue.

Changing the country's official English name back to Cambodia (which has been used by the US State Department all along) was intended as a symbolic move to distance the present government in Phnom Penh from the bitter connotations of the name Kampuchea, which westerners and overseas Khmer alike associate with the murderous Khmer Rouge regime.
