Meanwhile, the Communists proclaimed the People's Republic of China and claimed to be the successor state of the ROC over all of China, claiming the Nationalist government in Taiwan to be illegitimate.
The Republic of China also administers the Dongsha Islands, which are part of the disputed South China Sea Islands (official part of Hainan, which is part of Guangdong province under the ROC borders).
The People's Republic of China has a policy of not having diplomatic relations with any nation which recognizes the Republic of China and insists that all nations with which it has diplomatic relations make a statement which recognizes its claims to Taiwan.

Under the impression of the October Revolution in Russia and the May Fourth Movement (wusi yundong 五四運動) the Communist Party of China (Zhongguo gongchandang 中國共產黨, short: Zhonggong 中共) was founded on July 1, 1921 under the guideline of the Moscow-lead Communist International (Comintern; Gongchan guoji 共產國際).
A workers movement in Shanghai was brutally suppressed by Chiang Kai-shek, and he began to purify the Guomindang from communist members, and ended the first alliance between the Guomindang and the Communists.
With the domination of the right wing, the three political guidelines of Sun Yat-sen to cooperate with the Communists were soon refused.

Only after their removal to Taiwan did the chastened leadership of the Kuomintang (KMT, the ruling party) have the opportunity to create a "model province" according to Dr. Sun's vision of an industrialized and democratic China.

In order to accomplish both of these he put into practice his New Democracy or "Democratic Dictatorship." Under the Democratic Dictatorship, all four classes of society would be represented (democracy), but the government would deal with conservative or counter-revolutionaries harshly (dictatorship).
Most of these leaders, in fact, had grown deeply suspicious of the mass movement character of Mao's China, and future events would deepen this suspicion.
In fact, the experience of Mao's mass movements in part explains the Tienanmin Square incident of 1989; most of the Chinese leaders of the time deeply hated and distrusted mass movements, and Tienanmin Square looked alot llke the Maoist movements they felt had produced chaos.

Hence, as some scholars of China suggest the Xia and the Shang can possibly refer to political entities that existed at the same time just as the later Zhou (successor state of the Shang), is known to have existed at the same time as the Shang.
