EH.Net Encyclopedia: The Economic History of Korea
The dramatic history of living standards in Korea presents one of the most convincing pieces of evidence to show that institutions -- particularly the government -- matter for economic growth.
Given that both acreage and population remained stable during the nineteenth century, the worsening living standards imply that the aggregate output contracted, because land and labor were being used in an ever more inefficient way.
Efforts were also made to attract foreign capital, which ended in failure too.

A group of Japanese and South Korean scholars have been conducting joint research into their shared history since May 2002, when Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi and South Korean President Kim Dae-jung agreed to promote the project.
According to a voluminous report the group released online Friday, the Japanese scholars insist that Korean individuals' right to claim postwar redress from Japan over abuses during Tokyo's colonial rule lapsed when both countries signed a treaty in 1965 that normalized bilateral relations.
But South Korean researchers say that Korean people still have the right to claim compensation, insisting that the Japanese government and the ruling Liberal Democratic Party did not properly address historical issues when Japan and South Korea signed the treaty.
