The Roman province called Tarraconensis, supplanted Hispania Citerior, which had been ruled by a consul under the late Republic, in Augustus Caesar's reorganization of 27 BCE.
As the territory was slowly regained by Christians fighting from northern enclaves, in the long process known as the Reconquista, the name came to refer only to the Muslim-dominated lands of the South, the former Roman Hispania Baetica, with an ever-southward-moving frontier.

Nothing, not even the worst of the nightmares that had haunted his sleep during the long, interminable ride from Germania to Hispania had prepared Maximus for the actual devastation he encountered when finally, fevered and weak, because of his infected shoulder wound and of lack of food, he reached his farm.
then he would have been able to let go, to stop being a general to be only a man. But Hispania was far away and Selene needed his help, now more than ever, so he had to be strong for her too.

LEG II AVG - Roman Living History Society.
Probably originally stationed in Hispania Terraconensis LEG II AVG was later moved further North after 9AD to Strasbourg.
The legion was involved in squashing an uprising in Gaul AD 21 and there are records of veterans from LEG II AVG settling on land at Arausio (Orange, Vaucluse, France).
It is thought that the original Legio Secunda Augusta (LEG II AVG) was a re-organisation / re-naming by Octavian (the future Emperor Augustus) and Consul Gaius Vibius Pansa in 43BC of the II Gallica previously known as the II Sabina.
