Hanno the Navigator - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hanno the Navigator is said to have inscribed his account of the voyage on a tablet that was hung up in the temple of Ba‘al Hammon (whom Greek writers identified with Cronus) on his return to Carthage.
Hanno the Navigator was a Carthaginian explorer, sent out with a fleet and many thousands of colonists, who founded or repopulated seven Carthaginian cities on the Atlantic shore of Morocco and explored the Atlantic coast of Africa, apparently deep into the Gulf of Guinea.
The full Greek title is The Voyage of Hanno, commander of the Carthaginians, round the parts of Libya beyond the Pillars of Heracles, which he deposited in the temple of Cronus.

 Atlantis
The Great Island and the Island of Atlantis are on the meridian of the Atlas, that is, the massif of the Ahaggar.
Once it is understood what was the true nature and scope of Hanno’s discoveries, it becomes possible to face the hoary problem of the location of the island of Atlantis described by Plato.
Bacon gives a Christian dress to the story, that is used to explain the miraculous conversion of the inhabitants of Atlantis to Christianity, but if his connecting Atlantis with a fiery pillar in the sky is a pure coincidence, it is a peculiar coincidence indeed.

 The Voyage of Hanno
Hanno could hardly have been more specific and effective in the description of what he saw, but it is the universal agreement among scholars that it is impossible that he may have seen Mount Cameroon: the ancients were too primitive to be able to navigate as far as the Gulf of Guinea.
I suggest that the Aramboi are the dwellers of the Maghreb, since Herodotus calls the mountainous part of the Maghreb by the name of “midland of the wild beasts” and Hanno speaks of “hostile Ethiopians in a land land populated by wild beasts” in referring to the chain of the Atlas.
Hanno needed to bring back some Pygmies as evidence that he had reached the Equator, as Columbus brought back some people that he called Indians and we have called Indians ever since.

 Carthage's Truceless War
Hanno, nicknamed ‘the Great’ (for obscure reasons), went down in history as the inveterate foe of Hamilcar’s family, but the two men were not enemies when the war started.
Many a modern scholar rejects the claim because it is not so confirmed and because Utica later went over to the rebels along with the continuously-besieged Hippou Acra.
Hamilcar’s 'coup d'etat' is something of a puzzle: there was no social or political revolution involved.

 Discourses on Livy: Book 3
In the Pisonian conspiracy there was a woman called Epicaris, who in the past had been a friend of Nero, who judged it to be advisable to place among the conspirators a Captain of some triremes whom Nero had as his guard; she committed the conspiracy to him, but not (the names of) the conspirators.
But there is some remedy for both of these dangers; the first, being able to deny it, alleging the hate that the man had for you; and the other to deny it, alleging the force that had constrained him to tell lies.
Whence that the Captain breaking his faith and accusing her to Nero, but so great was the audacity of Epicaris in denying it, that Nero, remaining confused, did not condemn her.

 Battle of Bagradas River
The mercenaries had recently crushed Hanno and had gained a dominant position in the Bagradas Plain.
Hamilcar re-organized the citizen’s troops, brought some new mercenaries (Iberians?), and started to put psychological pressure on his former veterans who were now against him.
Gisgo, who had tried to settle down the riot by bringing the required money was captured with the excuse that Carthage was unwilling to pay also for the killed horses.

The history of science and the history of the scientific disciplines
As a history of journeys, there was also in connection with the discovery of possible prior claims which would assure the juridical legitimacy of political possession of those territories.
Thus a history of geography is -to paraphrase a well-known saying- more history of geography than history of geography.
These studies, together with those of historical geography, have also had great significance in the general development of the subject, since they were, for a long time, predominant among the different geographical studies.

 Hanno the Great
Hanno clearly belonged to the first camp, and when he rose to power, this policy seemed justified.
Hanno had never believed in expensive military adventures outside Africa, and argued against the Second Punic War, but the Barcids won the discussion and war broke out.
After the peace treaty had been signed, the Carthaginian troops returned to their homeland.

 The Voyage of Hanno
The Carthaginians decided that Hanno should sail beyond the Pillars of Heracles and found cities of Libyphoenicians.
This is the story of the long vorage of Hanno king of the Carhaginians into Libyan (African) lands beyond the Pillars of Heracles (Straits of Gibraltar), which he dedicated on a tablet in the temple of Kronos:
A day's sea journey beyond this lake we founded cities on the coast called Karikon Teichos, Bytte, Akra, Melitta and Arambys.

 Salammbo by Gustave Flaubert 1
Hanno gesticulated with his spatula; and those who wished the others to be quiet shouted still more loudly, thereby adding to the din.
But the abundance of his garments, his great necklace of blue stones, his golden clasps, and heavy earrings only rendered his deformity still more hideous.
He held a spatula of aloe-wood in his hand wherewith to scratch his skin.

 Hanno
All places under discussion can be found in the 1998 edition of the Times Atlas of the world.
On his return, Hanno dedicated an inscription to one of the Carthaginian gods, in which he told what he had done.
It is the only known first-hand report on these regions before those of the Portuguese, which were written two thousand years later.

Part of the answer, of course, is that the public face of anti-communism has been that of buffoons like Joseph McCarthy or the John Birch Society.
It encompasses his friendship with Robert Conquest (whom he has known since he was a child).
But neither McCarthyism nor the execution of the Rosenbergs (who were, of course, guilty) is an adequate excuse for denying the facts of Stalin's terror, or Mao's Great Leap Forward, or -- on a lesser scale -- Castro's persecution of homosexuals, among other groups.

 Himilco
Himilco must have landed at many ports; perhaps he founded colonies - Hanno did the same.
When the power of Carthage flourished, Hanno sailed round from Cádiz to the extremity of Arabia, and published a memoir of his voyage of his voyage, as did Himilco when he was dispatched at the same date to explore the outer coasts of Europe.
These words make Himilco a contemporary of Hanno, a great discoverer who probably lived in the sixth century.

Hanno the Great - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
After the war, Hanno refused to pay the mercenaries who had been promised money and rewards by Hamilcar.
Hanno's wealth was based on the land he owned in North Africa, and during the First Punic War he led the faction in Carthage that was opposed to continuing the war against Rome.
The mercenaries revolted, and Hanno took control of the Carthaginian army to attempt to defeat them.

What was best for Carthago: Hanno or the Barca's?
As spokesman for the landed nobility, he opposed the policy of foreign conquest pursued by Hamilcar Barca and his son Hannibal in the interests of the commercial classes.
After the war he repressed, in 241 Hanno was given command against the Carthaginian mercenaries who had raised a rebellion among the native North African peoples subject to Carthage.

Individualism is seen as a weakness in characters such as Gotthold, Christian, and Hanno.
Just months later, Hanno, the only Buddenbrook heir (and not particularly promising heir either), dies in a typhoid epidemic at the age of 15.

The "Elephant Lord" Homepage by John Michael Kistler
Rumors said that the Romans had a hand in it.
Despite the fears of Hanno the Great and the Peace Party of Carthage, who called Hannibal "That little spark that will set the world aflame", Hannibal was named leader of Hispania.
Hannibal immediately made his hatred of Rome felt, when he laid siege to a Roman ally nearby, the city of Saguntum.

Some say it's presence there influenced the design of the Ghurka's Khukri (it may have also influenced other designs, such as the Turkish Yataghan.
It saw service with many soldiers in the armies of Alexander the Great, where it saw action as far afield as India.
