Topic: Gracchi

 Philosophy, et cetera: The Gracchi
The Gracchi were politicians – it would be naïve to assume that their policies and actions were motivated purely by altruism, with no regard for their own political interests.
The consistency of the Gracchi brothers’ policies and actions should be carefully assessed.
In light of this, it would be difficult to then deny that the Gracchi themselves were genuine reformers.

This is the Conservative hotbed, where they are hoping to pick up enough seats to make up for a dismal showing in the Atlantic Provinces, Quebec and Ontario.
Today we're going to have several quotes since some right wingers complained yesterday that Harper's comment was just a slip of the tongue.
Of course, his own party's pollsters and Liberal organizers disagree with him -- but what does that matter to a political genius of Don's caliber?

Empire and Politics by Violence, to 79 BCE)
Hatreds remained from the period of the Gracchi brothers two and three decades before, and, given the violence that had been used in the past by those opposed to reform, Saturninus, Glaucia and their backers saw their use of violence as appropriate.
They were political allies of Marius and supplied him with knowledge of the workings of government that he lacked.
The violence and disrespect for rule by law that Rome& conservatives had initiated in the days of the Gracchi brothers, Tiberius and Gaius, had come full circle.

It was suppressed by the first-ever use of the soon infamous senatus consultum ultimum (the "ultimate decree" of martial law), and, in a riot in the Forum led by followers of the Senatorial party, he was murdered, together with 3000 of his supporters.
Caesar’s career is unthinkable without them; Augustus built upon what the Gracchi began.
It is easy to make such generalizations, but many books on their lives show the truth was far more complex and interesting.

 Second Century - Domestic Difficulties
Those who would defend Senatorial privilege (and what they claimed was the mos maiorum) who came to be called the optimates (the best people), flush with their victory over the Gracchi, became entrenched and unwilling to compromise on the pressing social issues that faced Rome.
Gaius began his political career by winning an election for a quaestorship in 126 (term of office beginning in 125).
A good portion of the rank and file citizenry had come to distrust the optimates and to regard the Gracchi as men who had died for their sake.

 THE GRACCHI
Factional politics: should the measure go through, the Gracchi would gain an enormous clientele and threaten the elite's control of the state.
When the senate denied him funds to carry out the assignment of plots, he secured a law by which the Roman people accepted the inheritance of the kingdom of Pergamon and applied the revenues of that kingdom to his scheme.
It is clear in the sources that many Romans, including perhaps some of his own supporters and clients, firmly believed that Gracchus was aiming at regnum (=kingship, a nasty word in the Roman political vocabulary).

Down to the time of the Gracchi, or thereabouts, the two great State parties consisted of the plebs on the one hand, and these nobiles on the other.
Honest optimates would wish to maintain the Senate's preponderance from affection to it, and from belief in its being the mainstay of the State.
Both seek one thing only--personal ascendency, and the State becomes the bone over which the vilest curs wrangle.
