 Guinea: A historical Profile
Guinea’s estimated population of approximately seven million is composed of a variety of ethnic groups.
Unfortunately, the rate of economic development was rather slow, and from 1960 onward a number of attempts were made to overthrow the government of Sekou Toure by assassination, coup d’etat and invasion.
The policy of the new government since Toure’s death has been one of decentralization, whereby the people of Guinea are encouraged to develop rural areas without centralized government control.

 Guinea (10/05)
Under Touré, Guinea became a one-party dictatorship, with a closed, socialized economy and no tolerance for human rights, free expression, or political opposition, which was ruthlessly suppressed.
In mid-1996, in response to the coup attempt and a faltering economy, President Conté appointed a new government as part of a flurry of reform activity.
Originally credited for his advocacy of cross-ethnic nationalism, Touré gradually came to rely on his own Malinke ethnic group to fill positions in the party and government.

During the fighting in south-eastern Guinea in 2001 against rebels forces from Liberia and Sierra Leone, there were numerous credible reports of human rights abuses by the security forces.
The political atmosphere worsened further in January 2005 when an apparent coup attempt against Conté was followed by a wave of arrests of soldiers, journalists and politicians.
Although there is a growing independent print media, journalists are often arrested after writing stories critical of the regime.
