Ethnic group - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
On the political front, ethnic groups are distinguished from nation-states by the former's lack of sovereignty.
The 19th century saw the development of the political ideology of ethnic nationalism, when the vague concept of race was tied to nationalism, first by German theorists including Johann Gottfried von Herder.
Immigrants are socialized into identifying as a member of one of the list of "ethnic groups" provided by the US Census Bureau and with various "traditions" which, although often of recent invention, appeal to some notion of the past.

Lethal Ethnic Riots: Lessons from India and Beyond: Special Reports: Publications: U.S. Institute of Peace
If ethnic protest is expressed through such institutions as parliaments, assemblies, or government ministries or through non-violent street demonstrations, it takes the form of ethnic conflict but not ethnic violence.
Antipathy produces a tendency toward generalization—with the anger focused on the whole ethnic group and away from the individuation of targets—so that ethnic antipathy makes possible indiscriminate violence against members of the same ethnic group.
Because such violence is born of hatred, it always aims to degrade and destroy its victims and to produce ethnic homogenization.

 Ethnic Cleansing and Genocide
Particularly for those who do not believe that the Holocaust occurred, the overuse of "genocide" bolsters their propaganda that the Nazi extermination camps and the "final solution" were not really such a uniquely horrible period in history.
Illegal Jewish settlers in the Palestinian controlled territory of Israel believe themselves to be victims of ethnic cleansing when their own government decides to evacuate them in the name of preserving peace.
With no shortage of instances of death and destruction wrought upon those who suddenly find themselves of the wrong ethnicity, religion, nationality or political belief, the time appears ripe for a reconsideration of the instrument which was to have brought such cases to a halt more than a half century ago.

 Ethnic Cleansing: Encyclopedia Article
There are many etiologically related considerations that prompt it: security, population subjugation, ethnic and religious hatreds, economic and political conflicts and advantages, modern ideological imperatives, and a desire for political and cultural autonomy.
Fires of Hatred: Ethnic Cleansing in Twentieth-Century Europe by Norman M Naimark (Harvard University Press, 2002) includes discussion of the Armenian genocide, the Holocaust, the Soviet expulsions of the Chechen-Ingush and the Crimean Tartars, expulsions following the Second World War, and the ethnic cleansings accompanying the wars in the former Yugoslavia.
In Rwanda, in 1994, the desire for ethnic homogeneity led to the mass killings of some 800,000 Tutsi and non-compliant Hutu.

The current hostilities pit separatist-minded ethnic Albanians against the various Slavic populations of Yugoslavia and occur at all levels of society, from the highest officials to the humblest peasants.
Portions of southern Yugoslavia have reached such a state of ethnic friction that Yugoslavs have begun to talk of the horrifying possibility of ''civil war'' in a land that lost one-tenth of its population, or 1.7 million people, in World War II.
The ethnic Albanians, who now number 2 million, were officially deemed a minority, not a constituent nationality, as they are today.

As a consequence of industrial growth and the Soviet government's policy of diluting and Russifying ethnic Romanians, there was significant immigration to the Moldavian SSR by other nationalities, especially ethnic Russians and Ukrainians.
Ostensibly, they came to alleviate the Moldavian SSR's postwar labor shortage (although thousands of ethnic Romanians were being deported to Central Asia at the time) and to fill leadership positions in industry and the government.
This figure rose to 10 percent in 1991 before dropping sharply to 2 percent in 1992.

Local observers suggest that the perceived and real discrimination among ethnic groups, scarce resources and ineffective local administration are aggravating ethnic relations.
Historically, Kyrgyz leaders have prevented ethnic violence largely through policies that promoted free market and land ownership in order to defuse the possibility of confrontation.
Earlier, local journalists reported fights between ethnic Uzbek and Kyrgyz youth in Jalalabad and Osh, during Kyrgyzstan’s independence anniversary festivities on August 31.

The Peace Encyclopedia: Genocide, Ethnic Cleansing
As homicide is the murder of a person, genocide is the murder of an ethnicity or the extinction of any human group sharing a genetic or ancestral affinity.
Technically, the Holocaust was an attempted genocide, as - thankfully - Hitler and the 'ordinary Germans' failed; colloquially, the term is also applied to attempts - especially if those attempts are well organized and systematic - or significant trends toward extinction.

 CHILDREN'S LABOR IN ETHNIC BUSINESSES
Studies of Korean ethnic entrepreneurship, for instance, by Min and by Park, suggest opposite conclusions about the roles of Korean children in their family-run businesses.
However, there has been no substantive study of how family members, who are said to be a key resource in ethnic businesses, may contribute to these businesses.
In fact, the upholding of FWC's could be pertinent to the experiences of other immigrant groups engaged in small family-run businesses, particularly if they are labor-intensive.

The motivation for using an ethnic slur is often racism.
The following is a list of ethnic slurs that are, or have been, used to refer to members of a given ethnicity (or, in some cases, nationality or religion) in a derogatory or pejorative manner.
The key here is that the person using the slur cares so little about the target, that the person's actual background is irrelevant.

 Topical Words: Ethnic
By then we had also seen ethnic minority coined to describe a distinctive minority group within another, dominant culture.
It meant the same in English as it did in Greek, and it was applied indiscriminately to anyone who was not a Christian or a Jew: a pagan.
Thomas Carlyle used it this way in 1851 in his Life of John Sterling: “I find at this time his religion is as good as altogether Ethnic, Greekish, what Goethe calls the Heathen form of religion&;.

But such strategies have been fairly hit-or-miss, says VandenBos.
