Dodecanese - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In 1943 the islands came under German occupation, and, although the Germans were driven out of mainland Greece in 1944, the Dodecanese remained occupied by Germany until the end of the war in 1945, during which time nearly the entire Jewish population was deported and killed in the Holocaust.
The Dodecanese (Greek: Δωδεκάνησα, Dodekánisa, meaning "twelve islands"; see also List of traditional Greek place names) are a group of Greek islands in the Aegean Sea, off the southwest coast of Turkey.
They would remain there for nearly a thousand years, though these were punctuated by numerous invasions.

Taverna Emborios - History - All about how Kasos came to be as it is today
In 1833 when the Revolution came to its successful end and a new Greek nation was formed, Kasos and the rest of the Dodecanese were omitted and instead, by the Protocol of London, were returned by the newly established Greek state to the Ottomans in exchange for Euboea, the island close to mainland Greece.
Rhodes, however, remained a Byzantine naval base from where the Saracens in 718 and again in 807, with the help of the Dodecanese islanders, set out to do battle against the Arabs, who had established themselves in Crete.
Despite initial promises to the contrary, the Italians attempted to integrate the Dodecanese islands into the Italian State.

 Dodecanese : Introduction Frommers.com
Although they have been recognizably Greek for millennia, only in 1948 were the Dodecanese reunited with the Greek nation.
The first thing to notice about this far-eastern Greek archipelago is that the Dodecanese -- "the 12" -- is in fact comprised of 32 islands: 14 inhabited and 18 uninhabited.
They have been known collectively as "the Dodecanese" since 1908, when 12 of them joined forces to resist the recent revocation of the special status that they had long enjoyed under the sultans.

Subsequent Italian governments, however, unilaterally denounced the accord with Greece and refused to carry it out, and Italy used a special article in the Treaty of Sevres (1920), whereby Turkey had ceded to Italy all rights and titles to the Dodecanese and Kastellorizon, to enforce its claim on the Dodecanese.
The Dodecanese group came to be fixed at 12 islands during the long Turkish administration of them, which began in the 16th century.
Secret treaties on the future of the islands, drawn up by the Allies during and after World War I, led to a dispute between Italy and Greece over which nation should have jurisdiction over the islands.

 Welcome to Patmos
It was on this island that St John wrote his divinely inspired Revelation the Apocalypse, the last book of the New Testament.
Located on the eastern borderline of the Aegean Sea, Patmos is the northernmost island of the Dodecanese island group. Its interesting landscape features low barren hills succeeded by small plateaux, while its lacy coastline is deeply intended by tens of promontories forming countless picturesque bays and coves.
With a mostly dry climate, the island is regularly visited by north winds, bathing into the sunrays for 3000 hours out of a year.

A major milestone in the island's history, which affected the fate of the other Dodecanese as well, was the founding in 700 BCE of the Dorian Hexapolis, a union of its three cities with Knidos, Halikarnassos and Kos.
Rhodes, the largest of the Dodecanese and the fourth largest Greek island (after Crete, Euboea and Lesbos), is a favourite port when visiting the south east of Greece and a very good starting point - much like Kos - for a sailing holiday in the Dodecanese.
The island is roughly ellipsoid or diamond-shaped and a mountainous range runs from north to south with the highest peak Mt Ataviros (1205 m), situated in the middle of the west coast.
