The reign of Pedro (1683-1706) is marked by the discovery of gold in Brazil, by the signature of the Methuen Treaty with England, and by the participation of Portugal in the War of the Spanish Succession, when an Anglo-Portuguese army entered Madrid.
The citizens appealed to the pope against this violence, and Honorius condemned it, and charged the superiors of the Dominicans and Franciscans to see that the practice was discontinued.
The energy he displayed at the time of the great earthquaque of 1755 confirmed his hold over the king, and with royal support he was able to use the alleged "Tavora Conspiracy" to humble the nobility and to continue the campaign he was directing against the Jesuits, whom he was determined to master.

Following the review of local government structure by the Local Government Commission set up by the Local Government Act 1992, the counties of Avon, Cleveland, and Humberside, their districts, and the district of York City were abolished, and 13 unitary authorities were created in their place.
The act also abolished the counties and their districts in Wales, creating 22 unitary authorities in their place from 1996, and abolished the regional councils and their districts in Scotland, creating 29 new unitary authorities from 1996, making a total of 32.
Since 1996 the two-tier structure of local government has ceased to exist in Scotland and Wales, and in some parts of England, and has been replaced by unitary authorities, responsible for all local government services.
