CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: St. Cyril of Alexandria
John sent Paul, Bishop of Emesa, as his plenipotentiary to Alexandria, and he patched up reconciliation with Cyril.
This may have been the only possible defence, since the Prefect of Egypt, Orestes, who was very angry at the expulsion of the Jews was also jealous of the power of Cyril, which certainly rivaled his own.
Cyril may have believed, rightly or wrongly, that John did not wish to be present at the trial of his friend Nestorius, or that he wished to gain time for him, and he opened the council without John, on 22 June, in spite of the request of sixty-eight bishops for a delay.

Shortly before her death, Cyril was made the Christian bishop of Alexandria, and a conflict arose between Cyril and the prefect Orestes.
L'Avvenire, the Catholic daily, said that the record of the Pope's investigation was thought to have been lost when Napoleon looted the Vatican during his invasion of Italy in the 18th century, and that its rediscovery was an exceptional event.
The Pope had failed to make this absolution public because the scandal of the Templars had aroused extreme passions and he feared a church schism.

The Pope was not the ruler of that Church, but one of the Ecumenical Patriarchs, along with the Patriarchs of Jerusalem, Antioch, Alexandria, and Constantinople.
The mediaeval Popes did not live in the Vatican, but in the Lateran Palace, which had been seized from its private owners by, of all people, the Emperor Nero.

Christ our Lord, True God and True Man
His heresy was vigorously opposed by St. Cyril of Alexandria.
Cyril used terms that so emphasized the unity of person in Christ that later on claimed that later on Monophysites led by Eutyches (who claimed that Christ’s human nature was absorbed by the divine) sought to support their heresy by appealing to St. Cyril.
Theodore had been a prominent bishop and a strong opponent of Arianism and Apollinarianism, but some claimed that his writings were guilty of Nestorianism.

It declared that Cyril’s teaching concerning the Lord Jesus Christ was in harmony with the Nicene Creed, and it included in its decrees (a) Cyril’s second Letter to Nestorius; and (b) A letter with twelve anathemas against Nestorianism produced by Cyril and the synod of Alexandria in 430, and sent to Nestorius in that year.
However, the Roman Legates, who arrived after John, joined Cyril and confirmed the condemnation of Nestorianism.
The rise of the status of the Bishop of Constantinople in the fourth century was seen as a threat by the Patriarchs in Jerusalem, Antioch and Alexandria, and especially by the latter.

Reply to Jason Engwer's <Catholic But Not Roman Catholic> Series on the Church Fathers: Sola Scriptura
Even Clement of Alexandria, and Origen, with all their spiritualistic and idealizing turn of mind, are no exception here.
Cyril was badly mistaken in his exegesis of Scripture, but this
I think we can safely conclude that Jason is guilty of selective presentation and fallacious reasoning once again, in the case of St. Cyril of Jerusalem.

This expression had been used by Cyril of Alexandria (who took it from St. Athanasius) with a perfectly correct meaning, since he used the term 'nature' to signify 'person'.
The Archimandrite Eutyches, however, was not confident of the patronage of the Roman pontiff So he craftily made use of his friend Chrysaphius, who was a favorite of the emperor, to persuade Theodosius II to take his part and to summon another council at Ephesus under the presidency of Dioscorus, bishop of Alexandria.
The first places in the council were denied to the apostolic delegates; the letters of the pope were not allowed to be read, the votes of the bishops were extorted by threats and stratagems; among others Flavian was accused of heresy, deprived of his pastoral ministry and thrown into prison, where he died.

Coptic language - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Pope Cyril IV of Alexandria did not last long on the throne of Saint Mark.
Revival of Coptic in the 19th Century A.D. In the beginning years of the second half of the 19th century, Pope Cyril IV of Alexandria started a Church-sponsored movement to educate the clergy and the new generations.
As a contemporary liturgical language, Bohairic is generally pronounced using the so-called "reformed pronunciation" mandated by Pope Cyrillus IV (1854–1861), modelling the pronunciation of Coptic letters after their equivalents in Modern Greek.

Pope Cyril IV entertained very friendly relations with other Churches, to such an extent that when the Greek Patriarch in Egypt had to absent himself for a long time outside the country, he left his Church under the guidance of the Coptic Patriarch.
Alexandria, as the great center of theological studies of the time, was able to analyse the heresies, to prove their falseness and to play an important part in defining the true doctrine.
The Council assigned the Patriarch of Alexandria to determine the date of Easter yearly, according to the rule resolved by the Council, and to announce the date to the other churches.

 ORIENTALIS ECCLESIAE
Let Cyril of Alexandria be a model to all in the energy and fortitude with which he defended the faith and kept it inviolate.
And it is evident, Venerable Brethren, that at the Council of Ephesus the Patriarch of Alexandria acted as the legal representative of the Roman Pontiff; for, although the latter also sent his own Legates, the chief instruction he gave them was that they should support the action and the authority of St. Cyril.
For Cyril, however, it was not enough to fight vigorously against heresies as they arose, not enough to guard the integrity of Catholic doctrine with energy and solicitude and throw the fullest possible light upon it; he was also untiring in his labors to recall his erring brethren to the straight path of the truth.

From his way of stating the matter, Sozomen seems to have himself believed that the Council did publish a creed.
Hosius the president and Protogenes Bishop of the place wrote to the Pope to explain, "from fear," says Sozomen, "lest some might think that there was any innovation upon the Nicene decrees." iii.

The same tyrant will hire from his courtiers some greedy fellow for a few ducats a month, who, being clothed in the mask of a patriarch, will servilely declare as his own opinion what had been dictated to him.
Why then is it that the Pope dreads these guardians of his own tribunal, who are all, in the first place, his own servile creatures; and who, in the second place, seek no other thing than to gain by any means his favor?
In the meantime, the Pope himself, to complete the last tragedy of crucifying the Son of God, is said to have summoned again his own masked council.

In this selection from his sermons, we honor St. Cyril of Alexandria, Bishop, Confessor and Doctor of the Church.
Cyril was the outstanding defender of orthodoxy in the first half of the fifth century (he died in A.D. 444), especially the doctrines of the Incarnation, the Real Presence, and Mary as Theotokos (Mother of God).
He presided over the Council of Ephesus in 431 as the representative of Pope Saint Celestine I. Behold!

 Saints of June 27
Bishop Cyril of Alexandria was severe, authoritarian, and violent in an age of the same.
He is considered the most brilliant theologian of Alexandrian tradition, although his stubborn rejection and occasional misinterpretation of his opponents' beliefs have been criticized by scholars.
Cyril insisted on two essential facts about Jesus--however difficult Christians might find it to hold them together: (1) that Jesus was begotten by God the Father before all ages; and (2) that Jesus was also begotten in the flesh of the Virgin Mary.

During this persecution, the clergy of Lyons, most of whom were in prison, sent him with a letter to see Pope Elutherius regarding the heresy of the Montanists.
