History of Crete - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In Crete, as in other Ottoman lands, there were also 'Crypto-Christians', families which were outwardly Muslim but some of whom retained their Christian identity in private.
In 1832 a Greek state was established which, however, did not include Crete and the island was administered by an Albanian from Egypt, Giritli Mustafa Naili Pasha, whose rule attempted to create a synthesis of Muslim landowers and the emergent Christian commercial classes.
The last Venetian outposts on the island were lost in 1718, and Crete was a part of the Ottoman Empire for the next two centuries.
