 Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness
Conrad was a seaman who sailed under several European flags before beginning his literary career, and critics of his own era often treated him as a novelist of the sea.
Writing in Youth (1902), Conrad said in England "men and sea interpenetrate, so to speak--the sea entering the life of most men and the men knowing something or everything about the sea.
Ford Madox Ford suggests Conrad even came to hate life at sea.

 Conrad and the Polish Poets
Suggesting Conrad's membership in the supranational "society" of the seaman, Slonimski gave a beginning to the actual dialogue about the biography of the author of The Mirror of the Sea in the categories of cosmopolitanism--not very accurately, in the end, because Slonimski had to revise his own judgment in the matter years later.
Conrad appears as a moral authority and receiver of doubts about the world rapidly rushing toward catastrophe, and therefore in the embodiment to which the writers of the occupation will often refer.
Slonimski "protested" against the burial of Conrad "in the County of Kent" (and after 30 years consequently repeated, "And he never returned to his own home, because his home in Kent was not his home").
