The American Civil War resolved two great issues: the nature of the Federal Union (and the relative power of the states and central government); and the existence of black slavery.
In August 1862, the enlistment of 5000 such troops was officially approved in the North, and eventually about 180,000 served in the Union army, many of them former slaves who had run away from their Southern owners.
