With a careful reading of the first mention above, it appears that it is a indeed a primitive form of a paddlefish and not of a sturgeon.

Looks like a juvenile Chinese Paddlefish to me.
Paddlefish have huge gaping mouths, I'd think it'd be pretty noticable even in a young'un, also paddlefish appear "scaleless", whereas gar have prominent VERY TOUGH scales(more like armor plating)....
one thing that definatly says "gar" as opposed to "paddlefish" is the fact that they couldn't penetrate the scales with a knife
