Benevolent societies were formed by several different ethnic groups: the South Carolina Society, founded by French Huguenots in 1737; the German Friendly Society, founded in 1766; and the Hibernian Society, founded by Irish immigrants in 1801.
Sephardic Jews migrated to the city in such numbers that Charleston became one of the largest Jewish communities in North America.
As Charleston's government, society and industry grew, commercial institutions were established to support the community's aspirations.

One of the leading artists in the movement was Alice Ravenel Huger Smith, a descendant of several distinguished families, who considered "poverty the inheritance of the land in which I dwelt."(3) She was largely self-taught, having neither the money nor the inclination to go to art school.
