Historical Biographies, Nova Scotia: Charles Lawrence (1709-1760).
The deportation of the Acadians, as horrendous an event as it was for the deported Acadians, was one that paled in comparison to the military events which were to unfold between the years 1755-63.
Lawrence, it would appear, did not give the matter of the deportation very much thought after its sad occurrence.
That Belcher was to render a report seven years later that cleared the English administrators of the Acadian charges, is, at the very least, suspect.

Finally, the record does not support the judge's speculation that Lawrence's truck was more easily overturned because it was empty and topheavy.
As for Tushman, he admits en- couraging Scott to obtain a chauffeur's license, but denies telling Scott that Tushman had "no legal right to tell him not to join the Union," and denies he asked Lawrence, "What is this sh-t," claiming he never used such language with Lawrence.

Wary of the native French-speaking Acadian population (whom he regarded as potential fifth columnists despite their claims of neutrality), Lawrence attempted to extract from them an ironclad oath of allegiance to the British crown.
He earlier handled the building of defenses on the Nova Scotian frontier, and brought to his gubernatorial post an exaggerated fear of local French belligerency.
